国技

国技（こくぎ）とは、その国固有の文化や伝統に根ざしたスポーツ競技・武術を指すが、厳密な定義は存在しない。また、国技であっても、国内で最も人気のあるスポーツとは必ずしも一致しない。

相撲は古くからの伝統を持ち、公式に制定されてはいないものの、一般に日本の国技と認識されている。

人によってさまざまな意味で使われるが、おおむね次の二つのどちらかの意味で使われることが多い（国花・国鳥と類似する）。

  • 国家機関によって特別の地位・待遇を与えられているもの
例：テコンドー（韓国）、アイスホッケー（カナダ）
  • 国民に深く親しまれ、その国の文化にとって特に重要な位置を占めるという考えが国民に広く支持されているもの
例：相撲（日本）、野球（アメリカ合衆国）

前者の場合は、国家機関から法令等で正式に「国技（national sport）」としての地位を認定されている。後者の場合は、歴史が古く、その国の伝統文化と深く結びついていれば国技であるとする考えもあれば、現在国民の間に人気が高く、競技者人口や観戦者人口が多ければいいとする考えもあって、定まった説はない。

国技の条件として、その国で生まれたものでなければならないと考える者もいる。しかし国民から深く愛されているスポーツが、外国に起源を持っていることが判明するというケースも珍しいものではない。

また、国技といえども必ずしもその国で人気ナンバー1のスポーツであるとは限らない。確固たる人気を得たスポーツであっても、様々な理由で国技として認知されないことがある。特に、そのスポーツが「外国から輸入されたもの」という認識が強く、より一層自国の文化に根ざしたスポーツや伝統武道が他に存在する場合には国技と見なされないケースが多い。（例：日本における野球、中国におけるバスケットボール、フランスにおけるサッカー）この場合、「国民的スポーツ」などという表現をすることが多い。

一方で、海外から伝わったスポーツが国技としての地位を得るに至った国も多い。（例：台湾における野球、英連邦諸国におけるクリケット）

[編集] 日本の国技

一般に日本では国技と言えば相撲を指すと思われている。しかしその意味するものは極めてあいまいである。

国技が相撲であるという考えが広まることになった起源は、1909年（明治42年）に両国に初めて相撲常設館が完成した際、それが「国技館」と命名されたことであるとされている。これは3代尾車親方（大関：大戸平廣吉）が命名委員会（会長：板垣退助）に提案し、了承されたものであるが、それは6月2日に行なわれた開館式で作家の江見水蔭が執筆した披露文に「相撲節は国技である」という内容が書かれていたことにヒントを得たということに過ぎない。

その後、国技＝相撲という考えは国民の間に浸透していくことになるが、国の機関によって正式に国技と認められたことはない。
