ソコトラ島

ソコトラ島（سقطرى, Suquṭra）は、アラビア半島の南300km、アフリカ大陸の東端アシル岬の東北東240kmに浮かぶ、イエメン領内のインド洋上の島。広さは東西に約100km、南北に約40km。もっとも大きな街は北岸沿いにあるハディヴ。島のすぐ西側は、アラビア半島とアフリカのソマリア半島に挟まれたアデン湾となっている。

古代からアラブ人、インド人、ギリシャ人などの商船の寄港地として栄えた。現在は、多くのヤギが島内のほぼ全域で放牧されており、イエメン本土のあるアラビア半島とは異なった生態系を形成している。

• 佐藤大輔の架空戦記『レッドサン ブラッククロス』ではイタリア領となっており、ドイツ軍も駐留していたが、1948年11月に日英枢軸が「ブルー・アイス作戦」によって上陸、激戦の末に占領された。

末端に地中海へと繋がるスエズ運河を抱えている紅海の入り口に存在し、ジブラルタルと並んで地政学的に重要な地点ということもあって、第二次世界大戦やそれに類する戦争を扱った架空戦記などでしばしば登場している。
