ポピュラー音楽、ポピュラー・ミュージック（英語: popular music）とは、 広く人々の好みに訴えかける音楽のことである[1]。
概説
ポピュラー音楽とは、何らかの「広く訴求力のある」音楽ジャンルに属す[2][3]、人々の好みに訴求した、あらゆる時代の音楽を包括的に指す用語[4]、等と定義づけられ、具体的にはロック、ポップ、ソウル、レゲエ、ラップ、ダンスミュージックなどが例としてあげられる[5]。
音楽産業（英: music industry）を通して多数の聴衆に配給されるものが典型的であり、芸術音楽とは区別される。また、伝統音楽（英: traditional music）のように典型的には学術的な形態によって伝えられたり口承によって小規模の局地的に限定された聴衆に広められる音楽とも対照的な存在である[6] [7] [8]
この用語はもともと、1880年代のアメリカ合衆国でティン・パン・アレーの音楽を指したものであった[2]。
「ポピュラー音楽」と「ポップ・ミュージック」は混同されがちであり、前者は概念的定義であり、後者は様式的定義である。
また、日本ではポピュラー音楽を指して和製英語で「ポップス」とも呼称する。
アメリカでは「pops」という語はボストン・ポップス・オーケストラのようにオーケストラがポピュラー音楽や映画音楽(ジョーズやスター・ウォーズのテーマ音楽)などを演奏することを示す。[9]。
