フルンティング

フルンティングを手に竜と戦うベオウルフ

フルンティング (Hrunting) は古代イングランドの叙事詩『ベオウルフ』に登場する剣。

巨人グレンデルを仕留め、次いでその仇をとりにきたグレンデルの母親との戦いに挑む主人公のベオウルフに、フロースガール王の廷臣ウンフェルスが貸与した。

古より伝来する名剣で、長い柄を持ち、刀身は血をすするごとに堅固となるという。その剣は強い力を宿しており、それを使って失敗する事がなかったという。しかし、グレンデルの母親が住む湖底の洞窟にベオウルフがたどり着いたとき、その剣は力を失った。ベオウルフはグレンデルの母親に斬りかかったが、一切通用しなかったのである。

ベオウルフは、グレンデルの母親との組み討ちの中で、洞窟内で見つけたヨートゥンの剣を使ってグレンデルの母親を倒し、首を切り落とす。巨人の剣はその血液で溶けてしまい柄だけとなった為、ベオウルフは勝利の証として倒したグレンデルの母親の頭と剣の柄を持って湖面へと帰還したという。フルンティングは謝辞と賞賛とともにウンフェルスのもとに返された。

結局、フルンティングは怪物退治には役に立たなかったものの、『ベオウルフ』作中では数多の合戦を経、大勢の敵を葬ってきた伝説的な名剣として語られている。

"Naes thaet thonne maetost maegen-fultuma,

"thaet him on thearfe lah thyle Hrothgares;

"waes thaem haeft-mece Hrunting nama;

"thaet waes an foran eald-gestreona;

"ecg waes iren, ater-tanum fah,

"ahyrded heatho-swate; naefre hit aet hilde ne swac

"manna aengum, thara the hit mid mundum bewand,

"se the gryre-sithas gegan dorste,

"folc-stede fara."

"And it was not the weakest of helps

"Unferth, Hrothgar's spokesman,

"loaned: the hilted sword called

"Hrunting, an ancient treasure

"with edges of iron and adorned

"with poison strips. That sword,

"hardened in blood, had never failed

"a man who grasped it in hand

"and dared a terrible journey,

"battles in a hostile place."

"Ond thu Unferth laet ealde lafe,

"heard-ecg habban; ic me mid Hruntinge

my splendid wavy sword

widely known among men

to have a hard edge.

with Hrunting--or

death will take me"
