ブリストル大学（英語: University of Bristol）は、ブリストル市に本部を置くイギリスの国立大学である。1909年に設置された。以来、イギリストップレベルの研究型大学で構成するラッセル・グループの一員として、またヨーロッパ大学連盟であるコインブラ・グループの一員として発展してきた。今までに関係者から9人のノーベル賞受賞者^[1]を輩出している。イギリス大学ランキングにおいて常にトップ10に位置し^[2]、オックスフォード大学・ケンブリッジ大学などと共に、英国を代表する名門大学の一つである。

歴史 [編集]

前学長チャーチル

1595年，工学部の前身であるMerchant Venturers Technical Collegeが設立される。
1833年，ブリストル医学校設立。
1876年，ユニバーシティ・カレッジ・ブリストル設立。
1877年，アルフレッド・マーシャルがユニバーシティ・カレッジ・ブリストルの学長となる。
1893年，ブリストル医学校とユニバーシティ・カレッジ・ブリストルが合併。
1909年，Henry Overton Willsを学長としてブリストル大学が成立。
1929年から1965年までウィンストン・チャーチルが学長を務める^[3]。

英国大学ランキングにおいては概ねトップ10以内に位置付けられている。2010年の英国研究補助金額は全英100校中8位^[4] であった。研究評価については2001年のResearch Assessment Exercise (RAE)において15科目がトップグレードである5*という高い評価を得ている。
