サバイバル映画（サバイバルえいが）とは、主人公やグループが極限状況下で生き延びようと努力する映画ジャンルのひとつである。他の映画ジャンルと重なることが多い。サバイバル映画は、剣戟映画や戦争映画、サファリ映画などと並び、冒険映画の一ジャンルであるとされている[1]。サバイバル映画は他の多くの冒険映画よりも暗い内容で、通常は一人のキャラクター（通常は主人公）にストーリーを集中させている。また、「主に現代的な状況下で撮影されている」ため、観客は設定に慣れていて想像しやすい。さらに、登場人物の行動はあまりロマンティックなものではなく、生き残ることに重点が置かれている場合が多い[2]。

1988年に出版された本の中で、トーマス・ソプチャック (Thomas Sobchack) はサバイバル映画をロマンスに例えている。曰く「どちらも社会秩序を脅かす障害を克服する英雄的勝利を強調し、フェアプレーや功労者・協力者の尊重といった社会的価値観を再確認するものである」と。ソプチャックは、サバイバル映画は、『飛べ!フェニックス』（1965年）の飛行機事故で生き残ったグループや『ポセイドン・アドベンチャー』（1972年）の横転した豪華客船に乗っている人々といったサバイバルを繰り広げる集団を、「社会の縮図とみなし、分けて考えている」と述べており、「サバイバル映画のほとんどの時間は、文明生活において享受できる、安全で確実な通常のサポートネットワークから切り離されてしまったグループが、サバイバル生活を経て機能的で効果的な集団へと変化していく過程を描くことに費やされている」と説明した。このようなグループでは、しばしばキャラクターのタイプが各々異なり、時には性格や特徴が誇張された姿で描かれることもある。このような映画では、歴史的に女性はステレオタイプ化されてきたが、女性が「グループの成功または失敗において決定的な役割を果たすことが多い」ともされている[3]。
