On January 1 we celebrate Public Domain Day as many works of authors who died 70+ years ago now enter the public domain and can be used freely.

Let us be aware: copyright is temporary. It only lasts during the authors lifetime and 70 years afterwards (in most countries). During those years it is limiting Wikipedia and her sister projects in showing works of art, literature, public art and buildings in countries without freedom of panorama, and more in the articles. But now a new batch is freed from copyrights!

An overview of images and texts that are restored or added to the Wikimedia Commons, are collected on: this page.

Many of these files still need a place in articles. You can help!

You can also help by uploading new files of subjects that are freed of copyrights.
You can also help by tagging all requests for deletion pages with the category when the file can be restored, which will be/was deleted.

As I follow the log of restored files this week, more images and texts will follow. If still files or texts are missing in the list, let me know or add them yourselves.

今後の予定

• URLs in the recent changes IRC feed will no longer be rewritten to unencrypted HTTP. This could be a breaking change for bots dependent on the IRC feed. [11]
• The edit tabs for the wikitext editor and the visual editor will be combined to one single edit tab. You will be able to choose which one you prefer. If you are not logged in, your choice will be saved as a cookie in your browser. You can test the single edit tab. [12][13]
• There is a beta feature that adds links to the subject on other Wikimedia projects. This works much like the links to for example Wikipedia articles in other languages. It will go out of beta testing and be enabled for everyone in January. Wikis that don't want this can decide to have it disabled. [14][15]
• The difference between "alerts" and "messages" notifications is unclear to some. The developers want feedback at the Phabricator task or on MediaWiki.org so they can make this better. You can give feedback in your language if you can't write in English.

Recent changes

• You will be able to find or mark bugs and suggestions in Phabricator that are specific for your language or wiki. [16]
• Notifications have been upgraded with more detailed and easier-to-access information. See the documentation. Cross-wiki notifications will be available soon on the two test wikis. [17]

Changes this week

• The visual editor uses the TemplateData extension to make editing templates easier. You will now get a warning when you edit a TemplateData form and leave it without saving. [18]
• MediaWiki will get a new authentication and authorization system called AuthManager. This is planned to happen in a month or two. Some bots will need to change how they log in. Two new and more stable authentication methods will be available now: Owner-only OAuth credentials and bot passwords. You can read more about the change. [19]
• The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 19 January. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 20 January. It will be on all Wikipedias from 21 January (calendar).

2016 WMF Strategy consultation

Hello, all.

The Wikimedia Foundation (WMF) has launched a consultation to help create and prioritize WMF strategy beginning July 2016 and for the 12 to 24 months thereafter. This consultation will be open, on Meta, from 18 January to 26 February, after which the Foundation will also use these ideas to help inform its Annual Plan. (More on our timeline can be found on that Meta page.)

Your input is welcome (and greatly desired) at the Meta discussion, 2016 Strategy/Community consultation.

Apologies for English, where this is posted on a non-English project. We thought it was more important to get the consultation translated as much as possible, and good headway has been made there in some languages. There is still much to do, however! We created m:2016 Strategy/Translations to try to help coordinate what needs translation and what progress is being made. :)

Steward elections 2016

Hi everyone!

May I remind all of you that the steward elections have begun? :-) Candidate submissions are open from 15 January 2016, 00:00 (UTC) until 28 January 2016, 23:59 (UTC). Candidates must meet the criteria (ie be or been an admin for at least 3 months etc) and obtain at least 30 votes in favor with an 80% support ratio.

Copied from the guidelines page: "Stewards are preferably multilingual, because steward work often involves projects of varying language, but this is not a requirement. They should also be available on a reasonably common basis. The stewards policy sets limitations; for example, stewards may not use their access on projects that they are active on to avoid conflicts of interest, and are encouraged to watch and help on the steward request pages. They can also join the IRC channel #wikimedia-stewards on freenode to answer requests."

Furthermore, it is prefered that steward candidates are active on multiple wikis as part of for example the Small Wiki Monitoring Team. Personally I would like to see candidates from Asia, like China/Japan/Korea. We lack stewards from that part of the world and it would imho be an advantage to have someone from there. • Administrators can hide individual entries of a page with RevisionDelete. There is now a button to choose "all", "none" or "inverse" in Special:Log. The article history will get the same buttons soon. Wikis that have done this locally with JavaScript will be able to remove that code. [22]

• There is now an extension called ArticlePlaceholder. It can automatically generate content on Wikipedia with data from Wikidata if there is no Wikipedia article. It will have a tag to remind the reader it is not an article and ask the reader to create one. The developer is now looking for smaller Wikipedias that want to try the extension. [24]
• The OTRS system will be upgraded. The plan is to do this on 3 February at 08:00 (UTC). It will probably take 6 to 8 hours. OTRS will be down during the upgrade. [25]
• Users will soon be automatically congratulated when they reach some edit count milestones. [26]

• 情報 ドイツ語版で先行導入されたカテゴリへのページの追加や除去について、日本語版でも2月5日の更新で導入されたようです。ウォッチリストにある非表示の選択項目に「ページのカテゴリ化」があれば利用可能です。チェックを外すことで表示されます。また、個人設定のウォッチリストのタブで初期値を変更可能です。活用法としては「Category:ウィキペディアのメンテナンス」に含まれるカテゴリなどをウォッチリストに入れておくと良いかもしれません。--Frozen-mikan（会話） 2016年2月6日 (土) 02:46 (UTC)

Visual Editor : final round to find IME bugs

Hello everyone

Sorry for typing in English. If anyone can translate this message, that would be very helpful - thank you very much!

Since August, you have the opportunity to try the visual editor (ビジュアルエディター) and find all possible bugs concerning Japanese language. Some important bugs has been reported on the dedicated page or directly on Phabricator. We thank everyone who contribute to make the visual editor a better tool!

Now is the last call for testing (especially this bug, that we can't reproduce). We plan to deploy the visual editor to all users on Japanese Wikipedia soon: everyone will be able to enjoy Citation tools, an easier way to create and manage tables or just the WYSIWYG interface!

I'm still at your service if you have any questions or remarks. Please post your questions in English or Japanese (or French, why not), as you prefer. Thank you!

ビジュアルエディター : IMEバグ出し最終よびかけ

みなさん、こんにちは。

8月以来、ビジュアルエディターを試して日本語に関するバグを洗い出す機会がありました。フィードバックページ やファブリケーターには重要なバグがいくつか報告されています。ビジュアルエディターがよりよいツールになるよう貢献された方々すべてに感謝します。

さて、今回はテストへの最後の呼びかけです(特に、われわれが再現できない このバグについて)。私達はもうすぐ日本語ウィキペディアのすべての利用者がビジュアルエディターを使えるようにする予定です：脚注ツールやとても容易な表作成＆編集、WYSIWYGなー見たままに編集できるーインターフェイスなどがだれにでも使えるようになります。

なにか質問があれば今でもお受けします。英語でも日本語でも（あるいはフランス語でも）質問してください。ありがとうございます。

• 100 books are digitalized and uploaded to Wikimedia Projects in collaboration between Wikimedia Indonesia and Museum Tamansiswa Dewantara Kirti Griya.
• 46 entries of are contributed to Chinese WIkipedia by Wikimedia Taiwan project partnered with National Chiao Tung University.
• Wikimedia Philippines announces its new project: the Encyclopedia of Philippine Heritage (EPH), as the second phase of Cultural Heritage Mapping Project, which contributed 800 articles in past two years.

Hi everybody,

My name is Erica, and I am a Community Liaison at the Wikimedia Foundation. I'm here to let you know that the visual editor is coming to editors at this Wikipedia soon. It allows people to edit Wikipedia articles as if they were using word processing software.

You don't have to wait until the deployment to test it; you can test the visual editor right now. To turn it on, select "ベータ版" in your preferences. Choose "ビジュアルエディター" and click save. When it is enabled, you will press the "編集" button to edit an article in the new software. To use the wikitext editor, you can press "ソースを編集".

After the deployment, everyone will automatically have the option to use either the visual editor or the current wikitext editor. For more information about how to use the visual editor, see mw:Help:VisualEditor/User guide.

More information about preparing for the visual editor is posted here.

• It's easier to add templates if you've added TemplateData information.
• Please help translate the user interface and pages about the visual editor. See the visual editor's TranslationCentral for general information. To translate the user guide, go to the MediaWiki.org page, and select "このページを翻訳". Your language should be available from the drop-down menu on the right. Once you've done this, you'll see the document in English, side by side with any translation work already done in your language. You can add new translations or change old translations. To translate the user interface, you need to create an account at translatewiki.net. Contact me personally if you need help with that.

ビジュアルエディターが導入されます

みなさん、こんにちは。

私の名前はEricaです。ウィキメディア財団でCommunity Liaison を努めています。

私はここに ビジュアルエディター がもうすぐ日本語版ウィキペディアにも導入されることをお知らせします。ビジュアルエディターによって、ワープロソフトを使うような感覚でウィキペディアの記事を編集できるようになります。

正式導入を待たなくても、いますぐビジュアルエディターを試すことができます。これを有効にするには、個人設定の "ベータ版"を開き、 "ビジュアルエディター" の箇所をクリックして保存します。有効化されれば、 "編集" ボタンをクリックするとビジュアルエディターで記事編集ができるようになります。従来のウィキエディターを使うには "ソースを編集"をクリックしてください。

正式導入後は、だれでも自動的にビジュアルエディターと従来のウィキエディターを選べるようになります。ビジュアルエディターの詳しい使い方は利用者ガイド（ mw:Help:VisualEditor/User guide）をご覧ください。

ビジュアルエディター導入準備についてはこちらをお読みください。

• TemplateData 情報を整備すれば、テンプレートを追加するのがより容易になります。
• ビジュアルエディタに関連するページやインターフェイスの翻訳を手伝ってください。全般的な情報は the visual editor's TranslationCentral をご覧ください。利用者ガイドを翻訳するには、 MediaWiki.org のページに行って "このページを翻訳"を選んでください。右のドロップダウンメニューから日本語が選べます。日本語を選べば、英文の横に日本語訳が（あれば）並んで表示されるようになります。新しい翻訳を追加したり、すでにある翻訳を改変したりできます。インターフェイスを翻訳するには、 translatewiki.net　でアカウントを作る必要があります。アカウント作成に手助けが必要であれば 個人的に私に連絡してください 。

曲記事の記事名の付け方改訂のお知らせ

PJ:MUSIC#記事名における、曲記事に記事名をつける際のガイドラインが改訂されましたのでお知らせいたします。

• 以前：リミックスなどのバージョン名やfeatといった客演情報を記事名にそのまま含める
• 現在：リミックスなどのバージョン名やfeatといった客演情報を記事名に含めない

音楽、楽曲プロジェクト全体で記事の主題を「曲」と据えているのに対し、記事名が特定のバージョンやリミックスに偏ってつけられていることによるねじれ解消を目的に改訂されています。今後、記事名の変更や移動依頼が出されることが少しずつ増えるかと思われますのでこの場を借りてお知らせいたします。--Gohki（会話） 2016年2月8日 (月) 10:49 (UTC)

カタラン・カルチャー・チャレンジ2016
