レーダーの歴史は1900年代に技術者が反射材を発明した時から始まる。1930年代、レーダーは実用化を迎える。

20世紀以前 [編集]

1887年、ドイツの物理学者であるハインリヒ・ヘルツが電磁波の実験を行った。ヘルツは電磁波が物体を通過する時、異なる性質を示す事を発見した。導体によって反射する事も発見した。電磁波の存在はイギリスの物理学者であるジェームズ・クラーク・マクスウェルによって存在が予言されていたが、ヘルツははじめて電磁波を実験的に創り出す事に成功した。

20世紀 [編集]

電子技術の発達により、徐々に進展する。

クリスティアン・ヒュルスマイヤー [編集]

1904年、ドイツの発明家クリスティアン・ヒュルスマイヤー（Christian Hülsmeyer）はドイツとオランダで電磁波の反射で船を検出して衝突を避ける実演を行った。ダイポールアンテナとスパークギャップを用いたものだった。海軍に採用されなかったため、生産されなかった。後に彼は電波測距儀の特許を取得している。 [1]

ニコラ・テスラもレーダーの開発において功績がある。

地上制御型レーダー [編集]

CRTに似たブラウン管に二次元的に表示する。

センチメートル波　レーダー [編集]

1940年代初頭、マグネトロンを使用して高出力の高周波が得られるようになり、分解能が向上したことで、より小さい物体をも検出できるようになった。バトル・オブ・ブリテンで効果を発揮した。この成果をアメリカ合衆国にもたらしたのがen:Tizard Missionである。[2]

ドイツ [編集]

ドイツではイギリスとは対照的にレーダー開発の優先順位は低かったが、対空用のウルツブルグが開発されている。

日本 [編集]

日本では第二次世界大戦においても学究的な側面が強かった。また、陸軍、海軍と民間の研究グループの協調が少なかった。世界の実用レーダー技術の元になったのは八木秀次・宇田新太郎の発明した八木・宇田アンテナであったが、日本軍はレーダーにあまり注目せず、むしろ逆索で感知されるだけの「闇夜の提灯」と揶揄した。大戦中、米英のレーダー技術に触れ、急遽開発を本格化したころには技術は大きく離されていた。また基礎工業力が低く、良質な電子部品を自給できなかった。

冷戦期 [編集]

第2次世界大戦後、対立軸が米国とソ連の間に移動した。双方は侵攻に備え、レーダー網を整備した。
