Finding official websites of former Japanese schools

I found the archived websites of the old Monbusho at http://wayback.archive.org/*/http://www.monbu.go.jp/

Do these pages have the URLs of the former Japanese schools:

  • ブレーメン国際日本学園 (Germany)

I ask this because MEXT (the successor of the old Monbusho) has listed URLs of Japanese schools in pages such as this one: http://web.archive.org/web/20130215023941/http://www.mext.go.jp/a_menu/shotou/clarinet/002/006/001/003.htm

As for this one:

  • サウスクイーンズランドアカデミー (Australia)

From http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.seirinkan.ed.jp/hills/ I found the page for South Queensland Academy http://web.archive.org/web/20080225083905/http://www.seirinkan.ed.jp/hills/sqa.htm - did it have a boarding high school program for Japanese expatriate students? What was its relationship to any Australian schools? Was it established in 1992?

Thanks!

ORCID

I'm Wikipedian in Residence at en:ORCID and a Japanese friend, who is not a Wikipedian, is doing ORCID outreach work there, which will benefit Wikipedia, as explained at en:WP:ORCID. Your Template:Normdaten currently relies on a link to the English-language article on ORCID. Could somebody assist by translating that article into Japanese, and placing it on this Wikipedia, please? A start was made at 利用者:Athomeinkobe/ORCID, should you wish to develop that.

Being a resource ourselves, I agree that bibliographic topics should be one our focus areas, and yet those are where the Japanese Wikipedia is seriously lacking. I wrote an article on authority control the other day, and I'm somewhat familiar with the area -- at least I already know what ORCID is and what it's for. I have too much stuff on my hands right now so it could take a week or two before I get to it, but I will definitely keep in mind that that topic needs an article.

Are these hoshuko a part of the same organization as the nihonjin gakko?

I learned about the following hoshuko:

Are these hoshuko the same organization as the nihonjin gakko, or are they separate organizations?

I ask because these hoshuko meet in the respective nihonjin gakko buildings. I wonder if the hoshuko are actually a part of the nihonjin gakko, or if they are separate but agree to share facilities.

Amsterdam schools appear to be different entities despite the shared location with no mention of the other in either web sites. Rotterdam hoshuko's location says that they are "located within the nihonjin gakko". Madrid's hoshuko says that they "merged" with the nihonjin gakko in 1996. Barcelona hoshuko says that they hold their classes where the classrooms are on loan from the nihonjin gakko.

It is talking about https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Licensing_update. It was uploaded prior to 2009 (in 2008) with a GFDL license (though it is not documentation itself, so is not the ideal use) and Wikimedia projects moved to CC-BY-SA in 2009, so any edits to this file would not be permitted to be uploaded under the same GFDL license (GFDL also has a share-alike clause). The upshot? Get the rights holder to relicense or dual-license under CC-BY-SA or an even less restrictive license. Others should chip in on whether this is the only solution, however. As I commented on the AFD, I found it extremely difficult to believe that 究めろ! W is a notable work. Contacting the Japanese school of Sao Paulo to ask for photographs of the main entrance with the name of the school on a sign

Would it be likely that the administration of the Japanese School of Sao Paulo understand an e-mail written in English? Even though there is a picture of the school at File:Sao_Paulo_Japanese_School.jpg, it's of low quality, and I would like to have a photo of the school's main entrance. Think about the first photo at CTV here. A photo of the main entrance gate leading to the campus would be nice too.

My concerns about an article

Hello! The article 正形表記法 is completely unsourced, and the whole of it is possibly original research (which, most likely, you have a policy against). The Lingit link on the bottom is possibly an advertisement, and possibly the only reason that article exists - to advertise the Lingit website. On English Wikipedia, there is an ongoing investigation to determine whether the author of that article is abusing multiple accounts. We should know that in a few hours, or maybe one or two days. Jkrdsr, the suspected sockmaster, was banned two days ago due to edit warring with me and two other editors. Jkrdsr was removing parts of articles/reports (or indeed, blanking the page altogether), and we were reverting it. See [1] and [2].

Oh, and just so you know, the Korean version of that article was removed after my request to do so.

An invitation to Edit filter managers of wikimedia wiki projects

Hi,

This is an invitation to Edit filter managers and patrollers who refer to edit filters from your wiki project to share and know about effective public filters from various wikimedia wiki projects.

It is almost six years since March 2009, that Edit filters are in use on various Wikimedia wiki projects. At meta we have started a platform page m:Edit filters benefiting to various local Wikiprojects to know good and effective (public) edit filters by sharing of relevant information with rest of wikimedia community. This will help editfilter managers, and there by concerned projects, to benefit from maximising potential of best possible (public) edit filters.

We are keen to have your participation in this collaborative and constructive endeavour and the discussions to know and learn from each other's knowledge and experiences.

Question about the book

Hi! I found out about this book:

Does anyone know more about the background of Mitsutoshi Miura? What kinds of connections did he have with the school? Who is the publisher? Was this sold in regular Japanese bookstores? Was the Japanese School of Manaus involved in the creation of this book? How would the title and name of the publisher be translated?

There is a possibility the book may be "vanity published". I would like to determine if the publisher paid the author for the book, or if the author paid the publisher for the book.

I posted on its talk page and the equivalent talk page on EN Wikipedia too, but it didn't seem to be getting any attention so I thought I'd try my luck here.

There are two things I want to bring up. First, JP Wikipedia has a page on the Winter Triangle (冬の大三角) and put information about the Winter Hexagon in there; but conversely, EN Wikipedia only has a page on the Winter Hexagon and put info on the Winter Triangle there. This creates a bit of a disconnect on the two pages; that is, I couldn't use the "Other Language Pages" tool on the sidebar to go from the English Wikipedia to the Japanese one. Is there a way of manually overriding this, and is it customary to use it?

Second, and the reason I was trying to go to the JP Wikipedia in the first place: does anyone know where the nickname for the Winter Hexagon, "Winter Diamond", came from? It doesn't seem to be in use at all in English pages, when I checked both Google and Wikipedia, but it seems to be relatively common in Japanese-language pages. I was wondering what its origin could possibly be.

First. en:Winter Hexagon is already connecting to 冬の大六角形 but that target is not. I think that you can remove that connection and reconnect.
Second. In historical ( as about one century ) JAPAN, "Hexagon" and "Rectangle" have a nickname as "Diamond". And that nickname is used with the romantic sensitivity. Instead of formally "six/four angles figure".
My unskillful English may not be helpful to you.

Question about Japanese spaceflight industry

Is there technical or economic interest by editors in the Japanese spaceflight industry? And might those editors be willing to help with content about that in the English Wikipedia?

Recent legislation in Japan is mentioned on the English wiki here: Space launch market competition#Raising private capital].

Apparently, the Japanese legislature is considering legislation to allow private company spaceflight initiatives in Japan under Japanese law.

While it remains to be seen whether the legislation becomes law and, if so, whether significant private capital will enter the Japanese space launch industry, it would be super helpful if someone with a technical or economic interest in the Japanese spaceflight industry, might keep their eyes on what happens with this legislation (in the Japanese press), and improve that Japan-related content on the English Wikipedia as the situation warrants.

Might it be possible for someone who reads Japanese to just do some quick searches to see if this legislation ever became law in Japan? It would seem the legislation should have either been rejected, or passed, by now. Thanks.
In 2007, a draft of the Basic Space Law was submitted to the congress by the Japan Liberal Democratic Party and others, but rejected. In 2008, another draft was submitted again and has been legislated on 28 May. It would make me happy if this information is useful for you.
No, I don't think 宇宙基本法 is it. The English Wikipedia article cites a Yomiuri article in 2015 that talks about the bill to be submitted next year (i.e., this year). We're only one month into this year's ordinary Diet session, and we have no news of yet about the bill. My best guess is that it is in its final drafting stages. For a while now, the Cabinet [3] and JAXA [4] has been talking about "宇宙活動法" to allow greater private sector activities, so I belive this is the relevant bill.

Any reliable sources about the (Associação Civil de Divulgação Cultural e Educacional Japonesa do Rio de Janeiro)?

Does anyone know where to find any additional sources about the pt:Associação Civil de Divulgação Cultural e Educacional Japonesa do Rio de Janeiro (リオ・デ・ジャネイロ日本人学校) that are not already listed at the Portuguese Wikipedia article? I looked at CiNii but I'm not sure if I missed anything, or if there are other sources I overlooked.

Also, does anybody know how to evaluate/confirm the reliability and independence of the sources stated in the article?

There is something of a "tie" in the PT.Wikipedia AFD about it (pt:Wikipédia:Páginas para eliminar/Associação Civil de Divulgação Cultural e Educacional Japonesa do Rio de Janeiro). One of the editors stated "A página parece receber cobertura significativa de fontes, resta saber se são confiáveis e independentes, se têm ou não respaldo no conteúdo da página, se são sobre a página, além de calcular o quão notável o assunto é ou não." which according to Google translate says: "The site appears to receive significant coverage sources, the question is whether they are reliable and independent, whether or not they support the page content, whether they are on the page, and calculate how remarkable it is or not." I would like to have Japanese Wikipedians weigh in on this information.

I've seen there is also "二次資料" requirement for Notability, but most Facilities articles don't have such resources.

You may put a certain template template:要出典 to request citations on each articles in Japanese Wikipedia. However I don't recommend this way because the articles in Japan will face a risk to be deleted as well. Japanese wikipedian is one of the most strict wikipedian in the world about Notability Requirement. We might need to have super hard work to keep the articles in Chinese, and it looks it has almost no chance.

Wiki labels & Revision Scoring as a Service for Japanese Wikipedia

Hello Japanese Wikipedia,

I apologize for my complete lack of Japanese skills. I would most welcome if my post is translated to Japanese.

So computers are very good at crunching numbers. Your average calculator can out smart you in arithmetic. However computers are terrible at pretty much in everything else. Programming computers to under take any task no matter how simple beyond computing tends to be very difficult. This is where Artificial Intelligence comes in. With Artificial Intelligence we teach computers how to solve problems without explicit programming for the solution. This is what we are doing.

We are working on a project called m:Research:Revision scoring as a service which aims to provide quality control Artificial Intelligence infrastructure for Mediawiki and Wikimedia projects. We already have our system implemented and running on a number of other languages editions of Wikipedia and are in the process of expanding to many more. Further more we have concluded the edit quality campaigns for English, Portuguese, Persian and Turkish recently and are processing the results to improve our algorithms.

We are currently mainly focusing on vandalism detection where we provide an API (m:ORES) that provides scores. We have made an effort to keep our system robust.

The examples I'll provide are based on a machine learning algorithm that was trained to use 20,000 reverted edits. This is kind of modelling is problematic for two reasons. First is, there are non-vandalism related reasons for edits to be reverted such as mistakes from new users, this would develop such an unproductive bias. Second problem would be it lacks the ability to distinguish good faith users from malicious ones. To demonstrate our system I will give three examples from English wikipedia. I have picked these three semi-random.

  • Score of 90% diff en:Moncef Mezghanni
    • As visible in the diff, it is clearly something that shouldn't be welcome on English wikipedia. Algorithms confidence also matches my human assessment.
  • Score of 75% diff en:Monin
    • When I look at the diff it isn't immediately clear to me if this should be reverted. Detailed look reveals that prior version had more neutral information, but new version at a glance isn't exactly clear cut vandalism, albeit spammy. Algorithms confidence drops just as my human assessment.
  • Score of 19% diff en:Curiosity killed the cat, but satisfaction brought it back
    • As visible in the diff this edit clearly improves the article. The algorithms confidence plummets as well. Algorithm is more confident that this edit should NOT be reveted.

We are also working towards a system for article quality where we use existing assessment by en:Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Teamto train our system. We only have this system on English wikipedia at the moment but we would be more than happy to expand to other language editions. I am uncertain if Japanese Wikipedia has a similar quality assessment scale. I have picked 5 random articles to demonstrate this.

Typical problem is that humans typically do not re-asses articles over time or articles are never assessed in the first place. Our system circumvents this problem by automating this.

We are hoping to adapt our tool to serve Japanese language. What we need is:

Once these are complete, we would like to start an edit quality campaign where we request the local community to hand code/label ~2000 revisions labeling them productive/damaging and good faith/bad faith. This would be similar to the campaign on English Wikipedia en:Wikipedia:Labels/Edit quality.

After this we will be able to generate scores for revisions that is usable by gadgets such as ScoredRevisions as well as tools like huggle. If community desires it, it can even be used to create a local vandalism reversion bot.

So in a nutshell our algorithm relies on community input to support the community. Feel free to ask any questions. Either here, on meta or on IRC on the freenode server and #wikimedia-ai channel where we hang out. You can also reach us at https://github.com/wiki-ai

We have generated the list of suspected bad words that are common in reverted edits but not in others. We would like human review of these as we trust the judgement of a native speaker. Please take a look at the list provided to determine if they are bad words (words that aren't normally acceptable anywhere on Wikipedia such as curse words) and informal words (words that aren't acceptable in articles but are OK on talk pages. In English examples of this would be words like "hello" or "haha"). Feel free to add words you think should be in the bad word or informal word list.

Qanat - Mambo

Hello. I'm working on the Dutch version of カナート. Of the Japanese variety I can find (online) that it exists and is called Mambo. I cannot find any other source, preferably online and in English, that would tell me more of this: history, technology and a link to the Iranian origin - if there is any. Can anyone help?

You may find a few more sources searching by 'Qanat Manbo', rather than 'Mambo' (roughly speaking, n and m are interchangeable before b or p in romanized Japanese), such as this pdf (See '2) Water catchment technique "Manbo" in the upstream area of the Suzuka River' on p.18 in the original document or p.12 as pdf file). Hope it can help.

I'm rather concerned about the recent changes in colouring that User:Dlgkstmf ar1103 has been introducing to Template:元素周期表.

  1. Mt, Ds, and Rg. These elements have been coloured as "遷移金属", which I assume means "transition metals". That is a rather bold claim given that no chemical experiments have yet been conducted on these elements (see p.25–26; the book is from 2013, so pretty recent, and I have not seen any papers since then on the experimental chemistry of these elements). Given the current lack of chemical knowledge on these elements, it strikes me that "不明" would be a more suitable category.
  2. At. The chemistry of astatine is certainly not unknown, as Dlgkstmf ar1103 claims. For there was already enough information in 1985 for Kugler and Keller to write about it in Gmelin's Handbook (8th edition, System 8a: ISBN 3-540-93516-9). Since there are a lot of sources, I'll simply point to the English Wikipedia article. It is true that astatine shows some marked metallic properties, along with some halogen-like properties: but that is more of an argument to classify it as a metalloid, and not leave it uncoloured.
  3. Ge, Sb, metalloids in general. There was, so far as I can see, no consensus for transforming "半金属" to "半金属元素 (半導体元素)" as a category, especially as that is wrong: As and Sb are semimetals in the physical sense, but they have electrical conductivities approaching those of metals. Furthermore, even if Dlgkstmf ar1103 wishes to transform it into a category for semiconductors, leaving Ge out of it would be ridiculous (although Sb would make sense). The Japanese Wikipedia article, based on many sources, lists B, Si, Ge, As, Sb, and Te as "多くの場合、半金属とされる" (which I assume means something like "often recognised/included as a metalloid"), so that leaving some of them out would not be very consistent with the majority of sources.

I notice that Dlgkstmf ar1103 mostly rests his claims on a single source that he keeps citing in his edit summaries: http://www.newtonpress.co.jp/separate/back_chemistry/mook_100415_a.html. But when this does not correlate with the known facts for some of the rarer elements (like At, a true backwater in chemistry), I think it is probably safer to go with primary sources whose focus is these elements.

Unrelated to Dlgkstmf ar1103, I am curious about the classification of Be and Mg as "その他の金属" ("other metals", I assume), outside of the alkaline earth metals. This was so even before Dlgkstmf ar1103's and my edits; it is a very interesting classification! Is this a traditional classification in Japanese chemistry books, for example? I would like to know more about this, especially since Be is certainly a chemically weak metal and Mg shows a little of this chemical weakness as well.

Finally, I apologise for my reverts that were, to be honest, edit warring, even though I tried to make efforts to discuss the changes on the talk page (my concerns were removed, as they were in English, though I restored them once as I was not aware of this page yet; what I wrote above is similar). I will not engage in this in future. I would also like to thank Y-dash for alerting me to the existence of this page.

While our guidelines recommend users to use Japanese for discussions, removing comments that are not in the language is not one of the accepted reasons to edit or delete others' comments and your comments have been restored. I would reserve my judgement on the scientific accuracy of a Newton Press mook, but I would say that the publisher specializes in scientific publications for laypeople (think Scientific American). Not that I have anything against science magazines for the mass (I think they're awesome), but there are other sources we can pull classifications from. For now, I will stop here. Double sharp, thank you for posting here and bringing these edits to my attention.

List of loan words in Japanese

Hi, Sillent DX. according to 『現代言語学辞典』[7], gairai-go(外来語) means foreign word. loan word/ loanword corresponds to hakuyo-go(借用語)[8].
you can't have complete listing because so many words are adopted to japanese language. i found some resources;
  • professor in Yamagata Univ. [9] published "Loanwords in Japanese"[10]
  • A study on Adopted Words on Nutritional Science (part1)[11]pt2pt3pt4, A Study on Adopted Words in the Social Welfare (part 1)[12]pt2
  • A Quantitative Research on the Increase of the Taisho Period Loanwords[13]
  • [14](National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics)
Hi, as explained by Ks aka 98, there is no complete list of contemporary Japanese loan words. However, the Center for Corpus Development at the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics offers full lexical items of their contemporary written Japanese corpus (N.B. the corpus is processed with the strong aid of their word dividing software, which often fails to analysis proper lemmata). You can create own loan word list from the list.
The center provides the full list and the list of the lemmata that has more than two examples in the corpus. (cf. http://pj.ninjal.ac.jp/corpus_center/bccwj/freq-list.html . To learn about the corpus, see their English site.)
Unzip and run the following perl one-liner, then you can get somewhat accurate complete list of Japanese loand words.
perl -CS -Mutf8 -F'\t' -nale 'print $F[2] if $F[5] eq q(外);' < BCCWJ_frequencylist_luw_ver1_0.tsv > gairaigo.tsv
or,
perl -CS -Mutf8 -F'\t' -nale 'print $F[2] if $F[5] eq q(外);' < BCCWJ_frequencylist_luw2_ver1_0.tsv > gairaigo2.tsv
