ジェイムズ・テイト・ブラック記念賞
ジェイムズ・テイト・ブラック記念賞（James Tait Black Memorial Prize）は、1919年にイギリスで創設された文学賞。英語で書かれた作品を対象としており、イギリスで創設された文学賞としては最も古く、最も権威のある賞である。ジャネット・クーツ・ブラックが亡夫ジェイムズ・テイト・ブラックを偲んで、出版会社A & C Blackと協力して創設した。スコットランドのエディンバラ大学が運営母体となっている。
過去の著名な受賞者
[編集]ノーベル賞の受賞に先立って、ジェイムズ・テイト・ブラック記念賞を受賞している者が4人いる。ノーベル文学賞の受賞者であるウィリアム・ゴールディング、ナディン・ゴーディマー、J・M・クッツェーらがフィクション部門で、ドリス・レッシングが伝記部門で受賞している。また1923年には、マラリアに関する研究で1902年にノーベル生理学・医学賞を受賞していたロナルド・ロスが、自伝によって伝記部門賞を受賞した。
その他の著名な受賞者としては、D.H.ローレンス、アーノルド・ベネット、ジョン・バカン、ロバート・グレーヴス、アーサー・ウェイリー、グレアム・グリーン、イーヴリン・ウォー、アンソニー・パウエル、ミュリエル・スパーク、J・G・バラード、アンジェラ・カーター、マーガレット・ドラブル、サルマン・ラシュディなどがいる。
この10年間の受賞者からさらに挙げると、グレアム・スウィフト、ゼイディー・スミス、マーティン・エイミス、イアン・マキューアンがいる。最近（2007年）においては、Rosalind Belbenが『Our Horses in Egypt』で、Rosemary Hillが『God's Architect: Pugin and the Building of Romantic Britain』で受賞している[1]。
選考過程と授与
[編集]受賞者の決定は英文科の教授により行われるが、候補者の選抜段階においては博士課程の学生も参加することで、選考の形式を厳格なものとしている。2006年の受賞に際してコーマック・マッカーシーの出版元が、賞の選考討議はスポンサーや他の文学賞、または各種メディアによる影響を受けておらず「学生たちと教授らの真剣な議論だけで、素晴らしい作品と素晴らしい本を決める」と賞賛のコメントを述べている[2]。 基金は現在、大学が補っており、2005年には賞金総額が6,000ポンドから20,000ポンドへ増額された[3]。これにより、フィクションと伝記を対象とする文学賞の中では、スコットランドで最多額の賞金が得られる賞となった[4]。
大学は賞の管理と発展について、イアン・ランキン、アレグザンダー・マコール・スミス、ジェームズ・ノーティらをメンバーとした小委員会からの助言を受けた。2007年8月、授賞式は初めてエディンバラ国際ブックフェスティバルで行われた[5]。
受賞資格
[編集]英語で書かれたフィクション作品または伝記作品で、提出日までの十二ヶ月以内にイギリスで初出版されていること。フィクション部門賞と伝記部門賞が同時に一人の著者へ贈られる場合もあるが、どちらか片方の部門だけでも受賞した者は、以降、両部門における受賞資格を失う。
