「マグニフィセント」（Magnificent）は、U2が2009年に発表した『ノー・ライン・オン・ザ・ホライゾン』に収録されている曲で、シングルリリースされた。

概要[編集]

フェスでのレコーディングで、ジャムっている時、コードをめまぐるしく変えているうちに生まれ、モロッコ人のパーカッション奏者と演奏しているうちに、バンドの一番のお気に入りになった曲。元のタイトルは「French Disco」といったが、途中で変えられた。[1]

歌詞はコール・ポーターとバッハにインスパイアされたもので、ボノ曰く「お互いを抱きしめあっている恋人たちが、自分たちの人生を神に捧げようとしている」状況を歌っているとのこと。[2]ラノワもチャーリー・パーカー風と評しており[3]、古風なイメージの曲のようだ。キーボードでウィル・アイ・アムが参加している。

が、セールス的には苦戦し、UKシングルチャートでは最高位42に留まった。U2のシングルがトップ40を逃すのは、1982年の「A Celebration」以来のことだった。それでもシングルのB面には多数のリミックスが収録され、UKのクラブチャートでは健闘した。ちなみに「Redanka's 180 Version Remix」 のベースラインはドナ・サマーの1977年のヒット曲「I Feel Love」との類似が指摘されている。

またこの曲がビルボード100にチャートインした週にリック・ロスの「Magnificent」も88位にチャートインした。同タイトルの違う曲がビルボード100にチャートインしたのは、1976年7月3日、Fleetwood Mac（74位）と D.J.ロジャース （100位） の「Say You Love Me」、1993年2月13日、メアリー・J・ブライジ（47位）とミック・ジャガー（84位）の「Sweet Thing」に次いで3回目。

ColdplayはViva la Vidaツアーの際、この曲をオープニングに使った。[4]

アイスホッケーチームのニューヨーク・レンジャーズはホームのマディソン・スクエア・ガーデンで試合をする際、試合前にこの曲を流している。
