マイケル・サミュエル・キワヌカ（Michael Samuel Kiwanuka、1987年5月3日 - ）は、コミュニオン・レコーズ（Communion Records）と契約を結ぶ、英国のソウル・ミュージシャンである[1]。彼はビル・ウィザーズ、ランディ・ニューマン、テリー・キャリアー、オーティス・レディングなど[2]、あるいはヴァン・モリソンやテンプテーションズなどとも比較される[3]。2012年1月に、彼はBBCの「2012年の音」に投票で選ばれた。

生い立ち[編集]

キワヌカは、アミーン政権から逃れてきたウガンダ人の両親の息子として、北ロンドンのマズウェル・ヒルで育った[4][5]。彼は、フォーティズメア学校（Fortismere School）で学び、Aレベルを修了して2005年に卒業した[4]。彼は、数多くの友人を持つ非常に気さくで謙虚な生徒で、当時からあらゆるジャンルの音楽を愛してやまなかった。彼は、ベース・ギターとジャズ・ギターを、学校のコンサートやリサイタルでよく演奏していた。彼はその後、ウェストミンスター大学のメディア・芸術・デザイン学部で学んだ[6]。

音楽の様式[編集]

キワヌカは、ビル・ウィザース[4]、オーティス・レディング[4]、ジャック・ジョンソン、ポップス・ステイプルズ、ザ・バンド、ジョニ・ミッチェル、ボブ・ディラン、エリック・ビブ、トミー・シムズ、リッチー・ヘヴンズ[7]などからの影響を認めており、ビル・ウィザーズと共演したドラマーのジェイムズ・ガドソンとも共演している[8]。

経歴[編集]

ソロ・アーティストとして活動する以前のキワヌカは、セッション・ギタリストとして活動しており、チップマンク（Chipmunk）とバシー（Bashy）などと共演していた[4]。彼の初の正式な演奏は、ケンティッシュ・タウンのザ・オックスフォードで行なわれた[いつ?]。彼に注目したコミュニオン・レコーズは、2011年6月13日発表の初作品『物語を聞かせて（Tell Me A Tale） 』[9]を含む、彼の最初の2枚のEP[4]を発表した。

キワヌカは、アデルのアデル・ライブ・ツアー2011、iTunesフェスティバル2011[10]において、彼女の助演をしている。また、2011年のハード・ロック・コーリングにも出演している[11]。

2011年に、彼はポリドール・レコーズと契約を結ぶ[4]。彼の名前は、BBCの「2012年の音（Sound of 2012）」投票で挙げられ、2012年1月6日に受賞者として選ばれた[12]。ユーロ圏危機の際に、スペインとウガンダを対置した2012年6月12日付のBBCの記事では、ウガンダ出身の有名人として彼の画像が掲載された。なお、スペイン側で掲載されたのは女優ペネロペ・クルスであった[13]。
