Infobox image syntax

Is there an Japanese Wikipedia equivalent to English Wikipedia's en:WP:THUMBSIZE or en:WP:IBI page? On English Wikipedia it's pretty much common practice not to use the thumbnail syntax for infobox images because the most infobox templates and the Wikipedia software will automatically format the size of the infobox image based upon the device the reader is using. In addition, it also makes it easier for screen reader to "read" to infobox image's caption when the caption parameter is used because a thumbnail image typically requires an "alt_text" parameter be provided for thumbnail images whereas the infobox caption parameter doesn't and can be read by screen readers. Maybe the software and templates used for Japanese Wikipedia work differently, however, based upon this post here. Anyway, just curious for my own benefit.

I would recommend setting the image size like "image=[[Image:Something.svg|200px]]" and "caption = whatever". In Japanese Wikipedia, setting the image size yourself is pretty common.--YellowSmileyFace会話2022年4月6日 (水) 13:53 (UTC)[返信]

Korean version of airline accident report from Japanese government agency?

I notice page 44 (PDF p. 25) of this page on the MLIT website states "Distribution of Korean version of HL7762 HIJ accident investigation report to flight crew"

Where is this Korean version of the report located, and how do I obtain it? I only see English and Japanese listed on the English MLIT accident report list page.

It would be good for the Korean Wikipedia article ko:아시아나항공 162편 착륙 사고 WhisperToMe会話2020年6月9日 (火) 20:16 (UTC)[返信]

Restoring InternetArchiveBot

I am working with the Internet Archive as a contractor on managing User:InternetArchiveBot's deployments across the different Wikimedia projects and language editions. InternetArchiveBot fixes dead links on Wikipedia articles and adds links for offline resources, namely books.

My understanding is that InternetArchiveBot is currently blocked here for a few reasons, including (1) high rate of live links being mistakenly treated as dead (2) editing above the rate limit and (3) users invoking the bot directly causing the bot to go above the rate limit. I am working on fixing all of these problems so that the bot can resume operation on Japanese Wikipedia. We are deploying a link checking server in Tokyo that will be able to check the alive/dead status of websites not accessible outside of Japan. We have also made improvement that will better ensure compliance with rate limits.

Your help is requested. So that I can test the performance of the new Tokyo link checker, I would like a list of URLs, working and not-working, for websites based in Japan. I am especially interested in ones that you know do not work outside of Japan. This will help us assess the bot's performance.

Thank you very much for your assistance. I am happy to answer any questions you may have.

Cross Wikipedia promotion and sock puppets for Prix Versailles

An investigation has found that articles on Prix Versailles ベルサイユ賞 and related subjects were the subject of a coordinated campaign of promotion, over several years and sixteen languages, involving numerous sock puppets and probably paid editing. Discussion tools update

Hello, all. I have good news about the mw:Talk pages project.

  • If you have enabled "議論ツール" in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures, you will get a new feature.  The new feature adds a [更新を通知] button to each ==Level 2 section== on a talk page.  If you subscribe to the section, then you will get Special:Notifications if someone adds a new comment to that section (but not if they fix typos or edit other parts of the page).  This can be very helpful on busy pages, especially if you only want to follow one conversations.  Please try it out and share your thoughts at mw:Talk:Talk pages project/Notifications.

These changes are currently scheduled for Wednesday, 25 August, probably around 23:00 UTC.  Please let me know if you have any questions.--Whatamidoing (WMF)会話2021年8月20日 (金) 17:17 (UTC)[返信]

A/B test for New Discussion Tool

Hello.

The mw:Editing team is building the New Discussion tool. This new tool was requested during the mw:Talk pages consultation 2019. You can turn on "議論ツール" now at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures. It changes the "話題追加" button. It makes "話題追加" work more like the [返信] button. It has both visual and wikitext source modes. It will add your signature automatically.

The Editing team wants to test the New Discussion tool. Your Wikipedia helped with the study about the 返信 tool. That study was useful and had clear, positive results. They ask you to help again with a new test. They want to learn whether the New Discussion tool works better, especially for new editors. In the test, they will turn on the New Discussion tool for half of editors. They will not change preferences for the other editors. You will still be able to turn it on or off yourself in Special:Preferences.

The test will run for several weeks. It will probably start in November 2021. The results will be posted at mw:Talk pages project/New discussion. The test results will help Wikipedia editors and the Editing team decide whether the tool should be turned on for everyone.

If your Wikipedia does not want to participate in this test, please contact me as soon as possible.

Prince Fumihito

Hello. I hope everyone's doing well. I would have posted this message on the article's talk page, but I needed a response in English so I ended up here. I just needed the help of some native Japanese speakers who could help with the concerns that some users and I have had on the English Wikipedia regarding Prince Fumihito's title. We know that he was elevated to the rank of "Crown Prince" (皇嗣, Kōshi) in the past months, and he has been referred to as Crown Prince Akishino (秋篠宮皇嗣殿下) on the Imperial Household Agency website. But what caught my eye was that the Japanese article is still at 秋篠宮文仁親王 (Akishinonomiya Fumihito shinnō; 'Fumihito, Prince Akishino'). I wonder if there is a specific reason that Japanese users here have refrained from adding 皇嗣 to his page's title. Is there a rationale behind it that we might not be aware of? I'd be glad if someone could enlighten me a little bit.

I forwarded your question in Japanese at the note page of 秋篠宮文仁親王. People in the note page said they decided not to change the title, but no one mentioned the reason. While I familiar with the word 親王 and 殿下, I have never heard 皇嗣 before. I think other people does the same.--Uiweo会話2022年1月3日 (月) 05:05 (UTC)[返信]
It's been a couple of weeks and no response in the note page. I don't think we can expect to get an answer from someone. As an ordinal Japanese guy, who is not a professional on emperor family, I would say that 皇嗣 is not a title. 皇太子 or 親王 is definitely a title. Historically oldest son of current emperor is the next emperor. The son is called 皇太子 (Koh Tai Shi). 皇嗣 means a successor of Japanese emperor but not necessarily be a son of current emperor. While some past emperors, who had no son, assigned 皇嗣 from relatives, there was no clear rule on 皇嗣 until 1889 (Meiji 22, 明治22年), when we learned succession order system in British royal family. This makes us some confusion if 皇嗣 can be a title or not, and some may oppose to use it as a title. Even I hesitate it.--Uiweo会話2022年1月16日 (日) 06:15 (UTC)[返信]

Reliable sources about "The Little One" (くろいの) by Kiyo Tanaka (田中清代)?

Japanese Wikipedia's policy on vandals and LTA's

Hello! I've come here to ask if Japanese Wikipedia has an equivalent to enWiki's en:WP:DENY policy. I would like to request assistance in improving the page of a Japanese LTA's page on enWiki, however I would like to not violate any policies on either Wiki. The current status of the page on enWiki appears to be a rough and incomplete translation of Japanese Wikipedia's LTA page on them. Thanks!

Hi Blaze Wolf. I'm not sure what exactly you are asking for. The enWiki's en:WP:DENY is an essay, and its Japanese corresponding page, Wikipedia:認識を拒絶する, can be found easily by following its interwiki link.
We have a policy on vandals, Wikipedia:荒らし, but that can be also easily reached from the enWiki's en:Wikipedia:Vandalism page. That's why I'm confused.
Could you also please clarify what you mean by "the page of a Japanese LTA's page on enWiki"?--RottenApple777会話2022年3月10日 (木) 21:09 (UTC)[返信]
@RottenApple777: Hello RottenApple! Apologies for the confusion, I often forget it's not policy and merely an essay, as it's often treated as policy. TO clarify a bit further (without going into too much detail because they're an LTA), there's an LTA here on Japanese Wiki that I recently came across through a post to enWiki's Teahouse (wasn't actually by the LTA but just someone who noticed an edit the LTA made). I noticed that they also have an LTA page on enWiki as well as here on jaWiki, however the enWiki page isn't nearly as good as the Japanese one.
Blaze Wolf, thank you for the explanation. I got it. Ok, what we have are:
Are they any help? A lot of our policies are originated from enWiki policies, and they are very similar, if not the same. Let me know what else you may need.--RottenApple777会話2022年3月10日 (木) 22:09 (UTC)[返信]
@RottenApple777: Thank you that helps! I'm mainly asking so I can appropriately request help from people here on Japanese wikipedia in improving the page since the LTA has shown up on enWiki.
@Blaze Wolf: then you want someone who is willing to communicate with you via something like Wikimail so that you don't have to reveal which LTA page you are referring to publicly, and thus you can avoid glorifying this LTA, right?--RottenApple777会話2022年3月11日 (金) 16:46 (UTC)[返信]
@RottenApple777: As much as I'd rather not (since my email address contains some personal info), yes I do. Especially since from what I was able to gather through Google's translation of the LTA page here, it's a rather nasty LTA.

A/B test for topic subscriptions

Hello, all.

The mw:Talk pages project would like to offer a new [更新を通知] button to half of the editors here.  The new [更新を通知] button will appear on each ==Section== of a talk page with comments.  If you click the new [更新を通知] button, you will "subscribe" or "follow" the discussion.  You will get a message in Special:Notifications when someone posts a comment in that section.

This is only for 50% of logged-in editors (not IPs).  Existing editors will need to click the new button to subscribe to a discussion.  New editors will be automatically subscribed to all topics that they start.  The Editing team hopes this will help new editors communicate with you.  You can test the [更新を通知] button now, on this page, by clicking on https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Help_for_Non-Japanese_Speakers?dtenable=1

You can learn more and talk to the Editing team at mw:Talk pages project/Notifications.  If you don't like it, you can turn it off in Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures and Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-editing-discussion.

This could be offered here in a couple of weeks.  Please tell me if your Wikipedia does not want to try this.--Whatamidoing (WMF)会話2022年3月24日 (木) 04:52 (UTC)[返信]

Article to delete

Hello. The article ロシアのファシズム (イデオロギー) is a partial translation in Japanese of a previous version of an article at the English Wikipedia (WP en). However, the WP en article was written using en:FICTREF and to push a POV, all the while using the title "Russian fascism" to make it look like the topic is a notable historical subject while the topic is de facto 'any claim of Russia, esp. Russia under Vladimir Putin, being fascist and any comparison with Russia and past fascist regimes'. Please see the discussions at en:Talk:Russian fascism (ideology)#Editing problems and my intervention at sv:Diskussion:Rysk fascism#POV. The article at WP en which served as the basis for numerous WP articles translations (mostly by the same user!) is clearly a POV full of en:FICTREF (I gave one example at the sv WP which is also valid here, and there are many others I pointed out at WP en). The article and its translations, I feel, should be deleted. Meanwhile, I have turned the WP en article into a general article with all the dubiously sourced claims removed, and have split wikidata:Q15975478 and wikidata:Q111487585.
What solutions do you propose? Could the article be speedy deleted by an admin? Thanks in advance for your help.

I'm pretty sure a lot of vehicles were brought to Japan, and the Polonez was featured in the anime series Master Keaton, similar to the aforementioned Trabant...

Even if the articles were written in Japanese, I probably do not understand them. Those cars look very cool, though.
FYI: I submitted translation requests at Portal:自動車/翻訳依頼. They will show up on Portal:自動車 where editors who are more familiar with the automobile industry would gather. Hopefully someone is willing to take up those tasks.--RottenApple777会話2022年5月19日 (木) 17:33 (UTC)[返信]

Request for autoconfirmed and extended confirmed perms on jaWiki

Hello! Recently I discovered an Japanese LTA who I reported to Meta:SRG and got globally locked. I attempted to revert some vandalism they caused on other Wiki's, however when I went to revert vandalism on this Wiki I was stopped by an edit filter (which I reported to the False Positives report page for this wiki). I figured that to prevent this from happening net time, I would request autoconfirmed and extended confirmed perms here. However, when I went to this Wiki's request for permissions page, it was only for permissions like Rollback. Am I missing something or does jaWiki not have a place to request perms like that? I'm only wanting to request them since I don't know Japanese so I can't really contribute here long enough to get those perms.

@RottenApple777: Pinging since you've helped me in the past with jaWiki related things.
Hi, @Blaze Wolf:. I just checked your user status at jawiki and saw that you just made it to be an auto-confirmed user on 2022-05-13 at 19:48---the date and time when you posted the first inquiry in this section(!). I guess you got one of the status you wanted by simply posting comments on this noticeboard. :)
Try again to see if you can revert the pages that are suffering from the pesky vandalism. If those articles are under extended confirmed protection (ECP), let us know.
@RottenApple777: Alright. I don't think there's anymore vandalism (it's likely already been reverted by now) but I'll let you know.
@Blaze Wolf: I forgot to list the site where you can request extended confirmed:
I do not know how easy/difficult to get requests to be granted.

I noticed that on the Wikidata page for レイコ・佐藤, we have a link to her National Diet Library page, which shows her name as 佐藤玲子. All the sources I see on Google, including web pages and books, show her name as レイコ・佐藤 instead (web page results, book results) (フラワー・ドラム・ソング, the name of a movie she appeared in, is added as disambiguation). Is 佐藤玲子 an alternative name for レイコ・佐藤, or does it refer to a different person? And if it does refer to レイコ・佐藤, should we move the page to 佐藤玲子 or just add it in the article?

佐藤玲子 is most likely to be a different person from レイコ・佐藤. 佐藤玲子 is an amature writer who published short stories titled as 観覧車 in 2000, as is shown in the National Diet Library page. She seems to live (or have lived) in Hokkaido because some of the literary coterie magazines where you can read her works were printed in Hakodate and Sapporo.[9] So we should remove the National Diet Library page link from the Wikidata page for
I think you are correct. I also found a biography of her on Amazon, which shows her name written as レイコ・佐藤. I've removed the National Diet Library page link from レイコ・佐藤 and added it to 佐藤玲子, a different Wikidata item that I just made.
I have another question. I'm looking for Michi Kobi's Japanese name. I found her VIAF page, which has a National Diet Library page for 岡本まち子. Do you know whether 岡本まち子 is Michi Kobi's Japanese name or if it refers to a different person? Thank you for your work on レイコ・佐藤.
Actually, I think her Japanese name is most likely 嬉し泣き is a movie she appeared in and a web page about that movie lists her name as such: [10] FunnyMath会話2022年6月19日 (日) 20:38 (UTC)[返信]
Yes, you are right. Michi Kobi is written in Japanese as ミッチ・コビ in the movie industry (another source is [11]). Her name is also written as ミチ・コビ[12](She is in a photo of 2012年 高齢者問題協議会 第6回 シニア・ウィーク@日系人会), while 岡本まち子 on the National Diet Library page is a haiku poet and 桜前線 is her haiku anthology. So they are different persons at this time, too.--Ryota7906会話2022年6月19日 (日) 21:12 (UTC)[返信]
Thank you for the information. I actually already saw that 2012 photo before while looking for her Japanese name, but I wasn't sure if it was actually Michi Kobi because there's nothing written about her on that page. I think I'll just use ミッチ・コビ for now, unless there's further proof that the picture shows the actress and not a different person with the same name.
Nevermind, I see the name ミチ・コビ used in a book while searching on Google: [13] I'll use that instead of ミッチ・コビ, since I think it's a more reliable source.
I have one last question. This National Diet Library page refers to ノブ・マッカーシー, correct? I see the page refers to a book called 駆け落ち and I have its cover here: [14]. I think the cover describes her as an overseas Japanese actress, so it should be the same person this time I think.
I am quite sure that both names are attributed to the same actress. You can see 渥美 延 on the book cover you have shown and ノブ・マッカーシー on its belly band (purple strip with white characters). Other reliable sources are [15](saying "ノブ・マッカーシーこと渥美延" in the middle part. The writer puts in "日本生まれの" just before her names but in fact the actress was born in Canada and raised in Japan. This writer is a college instructor.), and [16](It says the site was featured in the January 2007 issue of the magazine
Thank you for the confirmation. I suspected as much. And thank you for answering not only one, but three questions.
