ヴァガケラトプス Vagaceratops はカナダ王国・アルバータ州の白亜紀後期カンパニアンのものとされる地層上部から発見されたケラトプス類に属する恐竜。名前は古代ギリシャ語で「放浪する角の顔」という意味である。もともとはカスモサウルス属の新種とされていたが、2010年に新属として独立した。アメリカ合衆国・ユタ州で見つかっているコスモケラトプスに似た内側に湾曲した縁後頭骨によって特徴づけられる。そのためコスモケラトプスと類縁関係にあったとされる。[1] 本属はバガケラトプスと表されることもあるが、角竜類でもバガケラトプス科に属する別の恐竜、バガケラトプス(Bagaceratops)と区別するため積極的にヴァガケラトプスと表記される。
記載
ヴァガケラトプスは主に3つの頭骨化石から知られている。一般的な構造はケラトプス類の典型的なもの(オウムのようなくちばし、大きなフリル、鼻角など)であるが、いくつかの独自性がある。頭骨は上眼窩角が縮小され、低い瘤状に進化しており、近縁の動物と比較して鼻角が大きい。ヴァガケラトプスは、他のケラトプス類に比べて頭頂骨が小さく、縁頭頂骨が奇妙な形をしていた。10個の縁頭頂骨を持ち、そのうち8個は中央で平らになり、前方上方に湾曲し、融合してフリルの後端に沿ってギザギザの縁を形成していた。フリルは他のカスモサウルス亜科に比べて短く、四角い形をしており、長さよりも幅がある。
