ヘンリー・カウエル（Henry Cowell、1897年3月11日 - 1965年12月10日）は、アメリカ合衆国のミュージシャン、作曲家、音楽理論家、インプレサリオ。アイルランド系アメリカ人。
経歴[編集]
カリフォルニア州メンローパーク出身。幼時より非西洋音楽に親しむ。1914年よりカリフォルニア大学でチャールズ・シーガーに作曲を学ぶ。1931年よりベルリンで音楽民族学をエーリヒ・フォン・ホルンボステルに学び、テヘランやチェンナイなどアジアへの研究旅行を行った。後にニューヨークのコロンビア大学の教授となった。弟子にはジョン・ケージ、ルー・ハリソン、ジョージ・ガーシュウィン、唯是震一らがいる。また「ニュー・ミュージック・エディション」の編集者兼発行人として新しいアメリカ音楽の紹介に努めた。
初期にはトーン・クラスターの実験を行い、1931年、ロシア人レフ・テルミンと共同で「リズミコン」という楽器を製作している。チャールズ・アイヴズ、カール・ラッグルズ、ジョン・J・ベッカー、ウォリングフォード・リーガーとともにアヴァンギャルドなグループと位置づけられ、アメリカ5人組と呼ばれた。
作品は19曲の交響曲、2つの琴のための協奏曲、打楽器協奏曲、アコーディオン協奏曲、室内楽曲、合唱曲、歌曲など1000曲近くに上る。そのかたわら「新しい音楽の源泉」などの著作も残し、後進に大きな影響を与えた。
エピソード[編集]
- 1936年、年齢の離れた若い男性に手を出して逮捕。懲役四年の判決が下るが、刑務所内でバンドを結成しそのための音楽を作曲したことで話題となった。
- 1957年、日本を訪れており、雅楽の印象を元に「ONGAKU」を作曲している。
