ロジャー・ウィテッカー（Roger Whittaker、1936年3月22日[1][2] - 2023年9月13日）は、イングランド人のシンガーソングライター。ケニア生まれ。彼の音楽は、イージーリスニングまたはバラードと呼ばれる。バリトンの声と彼のトレードマークとなっている口笛でよく知られている。アメリカでは、1970年のヒット曲「New World in the Morning」や1975年のヒット曲「The Last Farewell」が知られ、「The Last Farewell」はBillboard Hot 100でTop20圏内まで上昇し、アダルト・コンテンポラリ・チャートでは1位を記録した。
幼少時代[編集]
ウィテッカーの両親は、イギリスのスタッフォードシャー出身で、食料雑貨店を経営していた[2] 。しかし、父親がオートバイ事故に遭ったこともあり、暖かい気候を求めてケニアのティカの近くの農場に引っ越した。ウィテッカーの祖父は様々なクラブで歌い、父はバイオリンを演奏していた。ロジャーはギターを演奏するようになった。
ケニアでは徴兵制度があるため、ウィッテカーは2年間ケニア軍に属した[1]。1956年に軍を離れ、医者になることを決心した[1]。そして南アフリカ共和国のケープタウン大学に入学したが、18ヶ月後には退学して教師となった[1]。
略歴[編集]
教師としてのキャリアを促進する目的のため、ウィテッカーは1959年9月にイギリスへ渡った[2]。そして3年間、バンガー大学で動物学、生化学、生物海洋学を学び、理学士を授与された[1]。彼は地元のクラブでは歌を歌い続け、大学などで歌を収録したソノシートを発売した[2]。その後まもなくフォンタナ・レコードと契約し、プロ・デビュー後の1stシングル「The Charge of The Light Brigade」を1962年に発表した[2]。
1962年夏、北アイルランドのポートラッシュで公演を行った。そして、1962年6月に2ndシングル「Steel Men」を発表した。
ウィテッカーは1964年の春にナタリー・オブライエンと出会い、同年の8月15日に2人は結婚した[1]。夫婦には5人の子供ができた[1]。
1968年、ウィテッカーはフォンタナからEMIのコロンビアにレーベルを変更した[2]。そして、4枚目となるシングル「Durham Town (The Leavin')」を1969年に発表し、ウィテッカーにとって初めてとなるUKトップ20ヒットとなった[2]。アメリカのRCAレコードと契約し、1970年にアップテンポの「New World In The Morning」を発表した。この曲はビルボード誌のイージー・リスニング・チャートでトップ20ヒットとなった。[2]
ウィテッカーは1972年にスウェーデンの歌手エバート・タウベの曲「Where the Angels Tread (Änglagård)」をシングルで発表し、北欧で人気を得た。1974年に彼はフィンランドのユーロビジョン・ソング・コンテストに参加した。彼は「The Finnish Whistler」を歌い、この曲はフィンランド国営放送の料理番組で使用されたこともあってフィンランドで有名になった。
1971年のアルバム『New World In The Morning』からカットされたシングル「The Last Farewell」を1975年にEMIから発表した。このシングルは彼にとって最大のヒットとなり、世界中で1,100万枚以上の売上を記録した[1]。1979年にウィテッカーは曲「Call My Name」を書き、エレナー・キーナンがイギリスのユーロビジョン・ソング・コンテストで歌って決勝まで進出した。また、ウィテッカー自身もこの曲を録音し、シングルはいくつかのヨーロッパ諸国でチャート入りした。1983年にはカントリー・ミュージックである「I Love You Because」を発表し、カントリー・チャート入りもした[2]。
1970年代と1980年代において、ウィッテカーはドイツ語で歌ってドイツで成功をおさめた。イッテカーはドイツ語を話すことはできないため、音声学上歌を歌った[1]。彼はドイツとデンマークのテレビに出演し[3]、イギリスの『トップ・オブ・ザ・ポップス』に10回出演した。
1986年には自伝『So Far, So Good,』を妻と共同で執筆した[1]。
2006年3月、ウィッテカーは彼の公式サイトで2007年のドイツ・ツアーを最後にし、その後は時々行うコンサートに制限することを発表した。現在はドイツ語に堪能になったこともあり、2008年11月にはデンマークのテレビにドイツ語でインタビューされた。
近年はウィッテカーはアイルランドのゴールウェイ県で暮らしている。
死去[編集]
2023年9月13日、フランス・トゥルーズ近くの病院で没した[4]。享年87歳。
ツアー[編集]
1976年、ウィッテカーは初めてアメリカ合衆国でツアーを行った。2003年には再びドイツでツアーを行った。2004年の終わりに心臓疾患から復帰した後、2005年にはドイツ、イギリスで5月から7月の間にツアーを行った。
受賞歴[編集]
ウィッテカーは250以上シルバー、ゴールド、プラチナ・ディスクを獲得している[1]。ベルギーで行われたクノック音楽祭では優勝したイギリス・チームの一員であり、個人としてもプレス賞を受賞した。1988年にはBASCA（ソングライターとコンポーザー、作家の英国アカデミー）より金バッジ賞を受賞し[5]、1986年にはゴールデン・チューニング・フォークを獲得した。
