3.2等から5.4等の間を730日の周期で変光する脈動変光星であり[4]、SRC型（半規則型変光星のうち赤色超巨星のもの）の代表星[8]。この星の直径は太陽の1500倍以上[3]、光度は太陽の約35万倍（放射）で、絶対等級は-7.0等級とかなり明るい。表面温度は2000度以下[3]。

双眼鏡で観測できる明るい変光星で、その赤さゆえに新星や超新星以外では見て楽しむことができる数少ない変光星の1つといわれている。

名称
