『ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンド』（The Velvet Underground）は、同名のロックバンドの歴史を綴ったトッド・ヘインズ監督・製作による2021年のドキュメンタリー映画である[3]。
2021年7月7日に第74回カンヌ国際映画祭でワールド・プレミアが行われた後、2021年10月15日にApple TV+で配信が開始された。
内容[編集]
ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドは1960年代初頭のニューヨークの音楽、美術、映画などのアヴァンギャルドから生まれたバンドである。当初は商業的な成功には至らなかったが、アンダーグラウンド、実験音楽、オルタナティヴ・ロック、パンクやニュー・ウェイヴ音楽の発展に大きな影響を与えた[4][5]。バンドの中心メンバーはルー・リード、スターリング・モリソン、ジョン・ケイル、モーリン・タッカーであった。芸術家のアンディ・ウォーホルがバンドのマネジメントとプロモーションを行い、彼はドイツの歌手・モデルのニコを参加させるように説得した。ヘインズの映画はこのバンドの文化的環境と音楽・映画的な影響を検証し、また結成から1970年代初頭の解散に至るまでの歴史を追っている。存命メンバーのケイルとタッカー、そして影響を与えたミュージシャンへのインタビューが音楽と映画のアーカイヴ資料と共に織り込まれている。
製作[編集]
2017年8月、ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンドに関するドキュメンタリー映画の監督・製作にトッド・ヘインズが就任した[6]。ヘインズは結成メンバーであるジョン・ケイル[7][8]とモーリン・タッカーといった存命者の協力を得た。映画のためのインタビューは2018年に撮影された[9]。1968年にケイルに代わってバンドに入ったダグ・ユールはナレーションで登場するが撮影はされなかった[10][11]。
公開[編集]
2020年10月、Apple TV+が配信権を獲得した[12]。ワールド・プレミアは2021年7月7日に第74回カンヌ国際映画祭で行われた[13]。2021年10月15日に劇場とApple TV+で公開された[14]。
評価[編集]
Rotten Tomatoesでは88件の批評で支持率は97%、平均点は8/10であり、「『ヴェルヴェット・アンダーグラウンド』はバンドとその時代を捉えたロック・ドキュメンタリーにふさわしい得意なアプローチをとっている」とまとめられた[15]。Metacriticでは30件の批評に基づいて加重平均値は88/100となった[16]。
一部の批評家からはこのドキュメンタリーは1969年のセルフタイトル・アルバムとユールの貢献に触れられていないと評された[17][18][19]。
