グレゴリー・マグワイア（Gregory Maguire, 1954年6月9日 - ）は、アメリカ合衆国の小説家。1978年に『The Lightning Time』でデビュー以来、子供向けや大人向けの作品を数十冊執筆し、児童文学の古典『オズの魔法使い』に着想を得て1995年に出版された『ウィキッド』は 2003年にブロードウェイミュージカル化され、世界的ベストセラーとなった[1]。

生い立ち[編集]

グレゴリー・マグワイアは、ヘレン・マグワイアとジョン・マグワイアの間に4人兄弟の末っ子として生まれ、ニューヨーク州オールバニで育った。母親は出産時の合併症で亡くなり、彼は父親により叔母のもとに住むようになった。生後6ヶ月の時に孤児院に預けられ、父親の再婚後の2歳のときに孤児院より引き取られた。マグワイアには父親の再婚により3人の異母兄弟がいる[1]。

高校はカトリックの教育機関で学び[2]、ニューヨーク州立大学オールバニ校で英語と美術の学士号、シモンズ大学で児童文学の修士号、タフツ大学で英米文学の博士号を取得[3]。

1978年の25歳のとき、『The Lightning Time』を執筆しデビュー。1979年から1986年まで、シモンズ大学児童文学研究センターの教授および共同所長を務める。1987年、非営利教育慈善団体であるChildren's Literature New England, Inc.を共同設立し、それから25年間、共同所長を務める[3]。

1995年、最初の大人向け小説『ウィキッド――誰も知らない、もう一つのオズの物語』を出版。出版当初は売れ行きが伸びなかったものの、2003年に『ウィキッド』としてブロードウェイミュージカル化されるまでに50万部を売り、2005年にはニューヨーク・タイムズのベストセラーリストに26週ランクインした[1]。
