『ポピュラーサイエンス』Popular Science 誌はアメリカの月刊誌として1872年に創刊された。記事は科学と技術に関して広く扱っている。ポピュラーサイエンスは58の賞を受賞した。
1935年から1949年にかけてパラマウント社の映画ポピュラーサイエンスのスポンサーになった。
2007年1月25日にタイムワーナーは17の雑誌と共にこの雑誌をBonnierマガジングループへ売却した。[1]

初期の歴史 [編集]
月刊ポピュラーサイエンスは1872年5月、Edward L. Youmansによって科学知識の普及を目的に創刊された。Youmansは以前、週刊Appleton's Journalの編集を勤めていた。初期の記事は大半が再版された。チャールズ・ダーウィンやルイ・パスツール、トマス・ヘンリー・ハクスリー、トーマス・エジソン、ウィリアム・ジェームズ、ジョン・デューイ、Henry Ward Beecherら錚々たる面々が寄稿した。1877年、William Youmans, Edward's brother,は共同でPopular Science Monthlyに加わった。出版社はD. Appleton & Companyで経済上の理由により1900年に売却された。[2]
James McKeen Cattellが1900年に編集者に就任、1901年に出版者に就任した。Cattellは学問を背景に」教育を受けた読者関係向けに発行を続けた。1915年に恐慌で読者が減少した。
日本でも異なる出版社から何度か日本語版が発行された。
