マイケル・シルヴァスティン

マイケル・シルヴァスティン（Michael Silverstein、1945年 - 2020年7月17日[1]）は、アメリカ合衆国の言語学者・言語人類学者。シカゴ大学教授。

人物[編集]

記号論や言語人類学分野の理論家で、人類学、言語学、心理学の教鞭をとっている。研究歴の中で、語用論、社会言語学、言語イデオロギー (language ideology)、記号人類学 (semiotic anthropology)、統語論などを取り上げ、それを文化の中の言語として包括的に説明してきている[要出典]。そのほかにも、シルヴァスティンはチャールズ・サンダース・パースによる記号論の術語、特に指標性（indexicality）概念の普及に貢献しており、メタ語用論 (metapragmatics)、メタ意味論 (metasemantics) といった概念を創出し[2]、いかなる言語や社会生活の理解においても、メタ意味論現象が中心的な重要性をもつことへの関心を喚起し、言語イデオロギーをひとつの分野として開拓した[3]。シルヴァスティンの業績は、その複雑な用語法と技術的難解さで知られている。

シルヴァスティンは、ハーバード大学で学部教育を受けた後、同じくハーバードにおいて、ロシア人の言語学者、記号論者で、文芸評論家でもあったプラハ学派の流れを汲むロマーン・ヤーコブソンの下でPh.D.を取得したが、ハーバードでは論理学者で哲学者であるウィラード・ヴァン・オーマン・クワインの下でも学んだ。1982年、シルヴァスティンは制度創設2年目のマッカーサー・フェロー (MacArthur Fellow) に、当時最年少で選出された。シルヴァスティンは、ハーバード・ソサエティ・オブ・フェローズ (Harvard Society of Fellows) の人類学分野のジュニア・フェローのひとりである。
