ニトロバクター科Nitrobacteraceae)は真正細菌プロテオバクテリア門アルファプロテオバクテリア綱ヒフォミクロビウム目の一つである。

淡水や土壌に一般的に分布し、グラム陰性且つ好気性菌である。この科には、一部のマメ科植物に関連する根粒菌の属であるブラディリゾビウム属Bradyrhizobium)などの植物関連細菌、かつて猫ひっかき病の原因と考えられていたアフィピア・フェリス(Afipia felis)などの動物関連細菌も含まれてる。海洋や土壌で見られるロドシュードモナス属Rhodopseudomonas)などの自由生活性の細菌もある。ロドシュードモナス・パルストリス(Rhodopseudomonas palustris)DX-1株は水素を生成させずに電流を発生させることができ、微生物燃料電池の開発に利用するために研究されている[25]アフィピア属Afipia)は大気中に生息し、炭素源としてジメチルスルホンを利用する[26]

この科の細菌は、アンモニア亜硝酸塩に酸化すること、または亜硝酸塩を硝酸塩に酸化することによってエネルギーを得る。
