アグネス・エアーズ（Agnes Ayres、1898年4月4日 - 1940年12月25日）は、サイレント映画時代に活躍したアメリカ合衆国の女優。ルドルフ・ヴァレンティノと共演した映画『シーク』のダイアナ・メイヨ役が有名である。
来歴[編集]
1898年4月4日、イリノイ州カーボンデールでソロンとエマ（旧姓スラック）・ヘンケル夫妻を両親に、アグネス・エア・ヘンケルとして生まれる。彼女には10歳年上の兄ソロン・ウィリアム・ヘンケルがいた。1914年、エッサネイ・スタジオ所属の監督の目にとまり、群衆シーンのエキストラとしてデビューした。
演技の仕事を続けるため母親とニューヨークに移り、女優のアリス・ジョイスに見出される。ジョイスは2人の外見的類似に注目し、エアーズは1917年の映画『Richard the Brazen』でジョイスの姉妹役を射止めた。パラマウント映画の創設者ジェシー・ラスキーが彼女に関心を持ったため、仕事が追い風に乗っていった。ラスキーは南北戦争を描いた『Held by the Enemy』（1920年）にエアーズを主演させ、その上セシル・B・デミル監督の作品に彼女を出演させてくれるよう懇願した[1]。この間第一次世界大戦中に結ばれた陸軍士官のフランク・P・シュッカー大尉と結婚するも離婚。そしてラスキーと交際を始めた[2]。
1921年、『シーク』で「ラテン系の色男」ルドルフ・ヴァレンティノの相手役としてイギリスの令嬢ダイアナ・メイヨを演じ、エアーズはスターダムにのし上がった。1926年の続編『熱砂の舞』でも再びダイアナを演じている。『シーク』出演後はウォーレス・リード主演の『アナトール』（1921年）、『禁断の果実』（1921年）、セシル・B・デミル監督の大作『十誡』（1923年）など多くの作品で立て続けに主要な役を演じた。
1923年には、ジェシー・ラスキーとの関係が終わり、仕事にも陰りが見えてきた。1924年、メキシコの外交官S・マニュエル・レアーチと結婚、2人は1927年に別れたが娘が1人産まれた[3]。
1929年、ウォール街大暴落で動産も不動産も失う。同年、ジャック・ホルト主演の『ドノヴァン』で最後となる主要な役を演じた。稼ぐために映画女優を休業し、ヴォードヴィルサーキットに出演。1936年、復帰出来ると信じて映画界に戻った。意に反して主演級の役を充てられる事も無く、やや太り過ぎてもいて、多くはクレジットもされない端役で出演。1937年、ついに女優業から完全に引退した[3]。
晩年と死去[編集]
引退後は意気消沈し、やがて療養所に送られた。更に1939年、娘の親権も父親のレアーチに移された[3]。
1940年12月25日、自宅にて42歳で脳内出血により死去、ハリウッド・フォーエバー・セメタリーに埋葬された[4]。
映画界への貢献により、ハリウッド大通り6504のハリウッド・ウォーク・オブ・フェームにアグネス・エアーズの星型プレートがある[5]。
