グラディス・ウォルトン（Gladys Walton、1903年4月13日 - 1993年11月15日[2]）は、アメリカ合衆国のサイレント映画女優。

生い立ちと経歴[編集]

マサチューセッツ州ボストンに生まれ、オレゴン州ポートランドで教育を受けたグラディス・ウォルトンは、1919年にフォックス・サンシャイン・コメディ・スタジオで映画デビューをし、いくつものコメディ短編映画で端役を演じた[3]。しかし、その演技の才能が開花するに従って、彼女にはより大きな配役が回ってくるようになり、ユニバーサル・スタジオの1920年の映画『ラ・ラ・ルシル (La La Lucille)』や、同じく1920年の『The Secret Gift』などに出演した。1920年の映画『Pink Tights』では、既にスターになっていたジャック・ペリンを相手に、主役を与えられた。1920年から1923年までの間、ユニバーサルの専属俳優として、28作に出演し、最盛期には週給 $600 を稼いでいた[4]。ユニバーサルを離れた後は、独立系の映画に数本出演した。出演作38作品のうち、現存するものは1920年の『Pink Tights』、1921年の『乱闘の果 (All Dolled Up)』、1923年の『The Untameable』と『Sawdust』、1925年の『A Little Girl in a Big City』の5作品しかない[5]。

ウォルトンは、1925年に女優を引退した[6]。ただし、最後の出演作を1928年の映画『The Ape』とする記述もある[7]。

グラディスは、舞台にも立ったと伝えられることがあるが、これは誤りであり注意を要する。実際には、1920年代はじめに同名のグラディス・ウォルトンという女優が二人おり、一人は東海岸の舞台女優で旅巡業もしており、これとは別人の映画スターが西海岸で映画を撮っていたのである。同時代の記述者たちは、しばしば両者を混同していた[8]。

ウォルトンは、1993年11月15日に、癌のため90歳で死去した[6]。
