クラシックトライアル（英: Classic Trial）はイギリスの競馬の競走。ダービーステークスの前哨戦として知られており、2014年の格付けはG3[2][3][4]。

サンダウン競馬場で行われるため、サンダウンクラシックトライアルと表記されることもある[注 1]。

概要[編集]

この競走は、サンダウン競馬場で4月のbet365ウィークエンド開催（イースターの時期に行われる開催）中に行われ、イギリスダービーの前哨戦の一つとみなされている[5][6][4]。

ダービーの前哨戦としては比較的早い時期に行われ[5][注 2]、その結果によってイギリスダービーの早売り馬券の倍率が大きく変動する[5]。また、ダービーまでまだ間があるので、本競走の次にダービートライアルやダンテステークスを経てからダービーへ挑むものもいる[5][7]。

過去にはときどき、傑出した競走馬が出走している[4]。シャーガーがその筆頭格で、ほかにはバスティノ、ファンタスティックライトなどが過去の勝馬に名を連ねている[4]。近年では1997年の出走馬ベニーザディップがイギリスダービーに優勝した。

クラシックトライアルは、サンダウン競馬場の平地競走と障害競走が行われる2日間の開催のなかで行われる。この開催中の他の主な競走は、ベット365ゴールドカップ、セレブレイションチェイス、ゴードンリチャーズステークス、サンダウンマイルである。

歴史[編集]

1953年にロイヤルステークス（英: Royal Stakes）の名称で創設された[8][4]。

1971年に賭博会社のラドブローク社（en:Ladbrokes）がスポンサーになり、競走名を「ラドブローククラシックトライアル」に改めた[9]。スポンサーはときどきかわり、ガーディアン紙、スレシャー社、ベットフレッド社などが務めている。2008年以降はオンライン賭博のBet365社がスポンサーとなっている[10]。

2020年は新型コロナウイルス感染拡大の影響により6月に順延開催される。
