ジェニファー・クレメント
ジェニファー・クレメント(Jennifer Clement)はアメリカ系メキシコ人作家。2015年に女性としてはじめて国際ペンクラブの会長となった[1]。2009年から2012年まではメキシコペンクラブ会長を務めていた[2]。著作は30ヶ国語に翻訳されている。
4つの小説Gun Love, Prayers for the Stolen, A True Story Based on Lies, The Poison That Fascinatesの著者である。カルトな古典的伝記Widow Basquiat （画家のジャン＝ミシェル・バスキアと80年代初頭のニューヨークを描いている）や何冊かの詩集も出版している。
幼年期[編集]
1960年、コネチカット州グリニッジ生まれ。1961年に家族でメキシコシティへ引っ越し、後にエドロン・アカデミーへ通った。高等課程を得るためにアメリカに移りCranbrook Kingswood Schoolを卒業。その後はニューヨーク大学で英文学と人類学を学んだ。MFA（美術学修士号）をサザンメイン大学より授与されている[3]。
姉妹のBarbara SibleyとともにSan Miguel Poetry Weekの共同編集者及び設立者である。現在はメキシコシティ在住である。
経歴[編集]
最初の著作であるWidow Basquiat は2000年に出版され、必読書であると賞賛された[4]。Glenn O’BrienはArtforumの中で"Magical…Widow Basquiat conjures real characters, a real time and real place. It’s not theory – it’s representation. … The life of Basquiat … is a joyous lightning bolt when it is described in true detail, as it is in Clement’s extraordinary as-told-to poem.”と書いている。最初の小説はオレンジ賞の最終候補作となった[5]。
2014年に発表されたPrayers for the Stolenはニューヨーク・タイムズのブックレビューEditor’s Choice BookやFirst Selection for National Reading Group Month's Great Group Readsに選ばれ、アイリッシュ・タイムズを含む各国のベストブックオブザイヤーに選ばれた[6]。
詩集も作っている。W.S. Merwinの導入によるThe Next Stranger(1993年), Newton’s Sailor, Lady of the Broom (2002年), Jennifer Clement: New and Selected Poems (2008年)などがある。賞をとったA Salamander-Childはメキシコの画家Gustavo Monroyの作品を取り入れたアートブックとして出版されている。
小説Prayers for the Stolenにより、2012年にNational Endowment of the Arts (NEA) Fellowship for Literatureを授与され、この作品によりThe Sara Curry Humanitarian Awardを受賞した。イギリスのCanongate賞も受賞している。Santa Maddalenaフェロー、MacDowell Colony’s Robert and Stephanie Olmstedフェロー(2007-8年)であり、2015年にはCity of Asylum Resident in Pittsburgh, PAに選ばれている。2016年、新たな小説Gun LoveによりGuggenheim Fellowshipを授与されている[7][8]。
メキシコの有名なSistema Nacional de Creadores de Arteの一員である。姉妹のBarbara SibleyとともにThe San Miguel Poetry Weekの創設者及び編集者である[9]。
メキシコペンクラブの会長として、ジャーナリストの安全について広く発言し、問題提議の一助となった[10]。
