ESEAP 2018 Report

2018年5月5日、6日にバリで開かれました第1回の Wikimedia ESEAP Conferenceに参加する機会に恵まれましたのでご報告します。ESEAP とは East and South East Asia, Pacific の略で、この地域のウィキメディアンの意見を交換するためにこのほど初めて開かれました。

Here is the report on for the very first Wikimedia ESEAP Conference, held on May 5 and 6 2018, in Bali. ESEAP stands for East and South East Asia, Pacific. The event was intended to exchange opinions and to have discussions among Wikimedians in this region.

カンファレンスで学んだこと / Lessons learned

運動を次のレベルのステージに持っていくには、ストラテジーを自分たちで決めていくのが重要ということを再認識しました。

I re-acknowledged that deciding the strategy by ourselves is the most important thing to raise it to the next level.

ストラテジーは通常、日本語では「戦略」と訳されることが多いですが、この「戦略」という語では若干、本来の Strategy の意味するところとのズレを個人的には感じています。営利企業でも非営利法人でもそうですが、日々行っているようなルーチンワーク(たとえばウィキペディアで言えば、記事の草取りをする、編集を行う、あるいはある一つの記事を作成する、など)を超えて、「そもそも達成したい大目標をどこにセットし、それを例えば5年後に実現するためには、どのような中目標をセットして、働きかけていけばよいか」というのは、なかなか難しいものです。もちろんこれは日々の記事編集が重要ではないということではありません。一方でそれとは別レイヤーで、人を動かして大きな目標を実現するためには、中長期的な目標が必要であることは、なかなか認識されません。(日本では多くの営利企業が3年の「中期経営計画」を立てていて、これと比較できるかと思います。)

Usually the word Strategy is translated as 戦略 in Japanese, however, I feel a difference between these two words, especially Strategy as a initiative as a strong power and direction to move forward.

Even if it is a company or a non-profit, it is very important but difficult where to set a goal, and where to set a middle-level target to achieve the goal within (for example) next 5 years, beyond daily, routine work. This is of course not the daily jobs are not important. On the other hand, it is hard to get understood by everyone that such a goal and targets how to move people and achieve the big goal with them are necessary. Confer: a lot of private company set mid-term management plan of 3 to 5 years.

日本のWikipedia Townがどのように拡大してきたか、またどのように企画・実施されているかの紹介を行いました。現状の課題についても触れています。

Introduced "Wikipedia Town" events in Japan. Here's the slides for it. I presented how it get popular and how it is organized. Also introduced issues about it.

Q:リタイヤした人も来る？ / Are there any people already retired?

A: 来る。65とか70とか。/ Yes, indeed.

Q: 政府とのコラボレーションはしてる？ / Does this event collaborate with government?

A: 特にしてない。(訂正: ) / Not particularly. (Correction: not with national government, but often with local-level governments (municipalities).)

マレーシアではローカルの図書館はそんな強くない。たぶん大学の図書館が強い。RedditがウィキペディアとFacebookの中間になるかもね。

Local libraries are not so strong in Malaysia. Possibly university libraries are very strong. Reddit may be a inter-medium between Wikipedia and Facebook.

Your Plan for the Movement in the Future / 将来、ウィキメディア運動でやってみたいこと

これは現時点での思いつきですが、Wikipedia:画像提供依頼は各言語版で個別に存在していて、いわばサイロ化しています。しかし「他の国の画像がほしい」という要求もあり、その要求は他の国に住んでいるユーザーには十分シェアされているとはいえません。Wikipedia:ウィキペディア・アジア月間のように、画像提供依頼を共有し、それを解消する編集イベントがあっても良いのかもしれません。

その他カンファレンスについてのコメント / Your Comments around the Conference

カンファレンスは、meta:Wikimedia Indonesia の強いイニシアティブで実現しました。カンファレンスをやろうという機運はここ数年、WikimaniaやWikimedia Conferenceで高まってきていたのですが(私はWMCONには参加していないので又聞きです)、ようやく機が熟し、またウィキメディア財団からの援助も得ることができて、実施に至りました。日本語版/日本のコミュニティからは、あまり関心が高いように見受けられないのはやや残念ではあります。

カンファレンス後の知見共有 / Knowledge sharing after the conference

福井ウィキペディアタウン in 足羽山にて、参加報告を実施しました。報告では、自身のWikipedia Townについて発表を行ったこと、ストラテジーが重要であるが日本ではあまり実感されていないのではないか、などについて触れました。資料はこちら また、Wikimedians in Kansai のメーリングリストでも同資料を共有しました。/ Knowledge sharing presentation took place at Fukui Wikipedia Town Asuwayama on May 27, 2018.
