Peninsulas.—-Asia has one mile of coast-line for every 337 square miles of itsarea; that is, three times less than Eu-rope; besides one-fifth of its shores iswashed by the ice-bound Arctic Ocean(9,900 miles out of 51,000), or by thefoggy and icy Sea of Okhotsk. Its pen-insulas comprise nearly one-fifth of itssurface. Three immense offsets continuethe continent of Asia into more tropicallatitudes, Arabia, India, and the Indo-Chinese peninsula, and some likenessexists between them and the threesouthern peninsulas of Europei, Spain,Italy, and the Balkan peninsula, sur-rounded by its archipelago of hundredsof islands. Seas^ and Gulfs.—The early inhabitantsof Asia had no Mediterranean Sea toserve as a highway of communicationbetween the southern peninsulas. Thegulfs which separate them, the ArabianSea and the Bay of Bengal, are wide opendivisions of the Indian Ocean.
