ノート:上田真

略歴 　1931年、兵庫県小野市に生まれる。1954年、神戸大学文学部を卒業。同年、フルブライト留学生として米国ネブラスカ大学に留学し、二年後英文学にてM.A.の学位を受ける。後、ワシントン大学に転じ、1962年比較文学にてPh.D.を取得する。1961年よりカナダのトロント大学にて日本文学の講師となり、翌年助教授、65年には教授に昇進する。1971年、米国スタンフォード大学教授となり、日本文学および比較文学を教える。1975年から四年間、および1990年から四年間、同大学東亜文学科の科長を勤める。1996年引退。その間、インデアナ大学で文学科の客員メンバーを勤めたり、日本の国文学研究資料館の客員教授として招かれたりしたこともある。 　博士論文は、世阿弥と芭蕉とイェーツとパウンドの各詩論を比較研究したもので、後にオランダのムートン社から出版された。他に日本の文芸論や川端康成ら近代作家の研究も多いが、次第に短歌や俳句、川柳を中心とした日本の詩歌研究に移ってゆく。芭蕉や蕪村、一茶の伝記を英文で書いたり、現代短歌や現代俳句の英訳選集を出版したりしたのも、その例である。なお、その英訳俳句選集はアメリカ俳句協会賞を受けた。
