Éléments de mathématique est un traité de mathématiques du groupe Nicolas Bourbaki, signé N. Bourbaki et composé de dix livres (divisés chacun en un ou plusieurs chapitres). Les premiers tomes furent publiés par les éditions Hermann à partir de 1940 d'abord sous forme de fascicules, puis sous forme de volumes reliés. À la suite d'un désaccord avec l'éditeur, la publication a été reprise dans les années 1970 par le CCLS puis, dans les années 1980, par les éditions Masson. Depuis 2006, Springer Verlag réédite tous les fascicules.

Le singulier « mathématique » utilisé dans le titre est un fait volontaire des auteurs, qui pensent que la discipline constitue un bloc unique, contrairement à ce que suggère son intitulé habituel. Inversement, les Éléments d'histoire des mathématiques, des mêmes auteurs, adoptent le pluriel, pour indiquer qu'avant Bourbaki, les mathématiques étaient un ensemble épars de disciplines, et que c'est la notion moderne de structure qui a permis leur unification.

Évolution du projet

Le premier volume à être publié, en 1939, fut le Fascicule de résultats de la Théorie des ensembles. La publication des volumes suivants ne respecta pas l'ordre du traité. Ainsi le dixième chapitre de l’Algèbre commutative fut le dernier volume publié en 1998. Les Éléments de mathématique restent, encore à ce jour, inachevés.

Les premières versions sont disponibles en ligne. La plupart des livres publiés étaient épuisés depuis des années. L'éditeur Springer a cependant entrepris en 2006 leur réimpression. À cet effet, ont été réimprimés d'abord : Algèbre commutative, Groupes et algèbres de Lie et la Théorie des ensembles, puis tous les autres livres. Une nouvelle édition complètement refondue du chapitre 8 du livre d'Algèbre (Modules et anneaux semi-simples) a été publiée par Springer en 2012.

Figurent ci-dessous, pour chaque volume ou fascicule des Éléments de mathématique, les références de la première et de la dernière édition. Les éditeurs ont tout d'abord été Hermann (depuis les débuts de la rédaction du Traité, en 1939) puis Masson (de 1980 jusqu'en 1998), et enfin Springer (avec la parution, en 2012, de la deuxième édition du chapitre 8 du Livre d'Algèbre). Springer a réimprimé ou réédité, depuis 2006, tous les volumes ou fascicules parus du Traité.

Éléments de mathématique is a treatise on mathematics by the collective Nicolas Bourbaki, composed of ten books (each divided into one or more chapters). The first volumes were published by Éditions Hermann from 1940 initially in the form of booklets and then as bound volumes. Following a disagreement with the editor, the publication was resumed in the 1970s by the CCLS, and then in the 1980s by Editions Masson. Since 2006, Springer Verlag has republished all the fascicles.

The strange singular "mathématique" in the title is deliberate, to convey the authors' belief that the material is a unity, contrary to what conventional form of the title might suggest.^[1] Conversely, the title Éléments d'histoire des mathématiques by the same authors employs the plural to indicate that before Bourbaki, mathematics was a set of scattered disciplines, and that the modern notion of structure has allowed their unification.^[2]

The first six volumes follow a logical sequence. The subsequent volumes are dependent on the first six, but not on each other.^[1]

Inter-relationship of the books

In the first six books, every statement in the text assumes as known only those results which have already been discussed in the same chapter, or in the previous chapters ordered as follows:

Later books assume knowledge of the first six books and their relationship to the other books in the series will be indicated at the outset.

Evolution of the project

The first volume, published in 1939, was the Fascicule de résultats of Théorie des ensembles. The publication of subsequent volumes did not follow the order of the Treatise.^[1] Publication continues intermittently - the tenth chapter of Algèbre commutative was published, in 1998 and the eight chapter of Algèbre was published in 2012 . The Éléments de mathématique remains unfinished to this day.

Early versions are available online.^[6] Most of the books published were out of print for years. The publisher Springer started their republication in 2006.
