English: Jólablót (YuleSacrifice) on Winter Solstice 2009. Contemporary Icelandic pagans, members of Ásatrúarfélagið, stand in a circle around a ceremonial fire as they prepare to conduct a religious ceremony. The location is the land of Ásatrúarfélagið in Öskjuhlíð, Reykjavík. The man holding the drinking horn and ceremonial ring is Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson, allsherjargoði (Common Chieftain or High Priest).
The photograph captures only a fraction of the (80 or so?) people attending the ceremony. The somewhat obtrusive recording equipment belonged, I was told, to a German TV station filming the event.
