English: A kettle used for making "composition", a mixture of glue and molasses or treacle and later glycerin, which was poured out to make rollers for inking type in letterpress printing. The ink adhesion and flexibility properties of a composition roller meant that it was more suitable than either leather or rubber for its purpose.
