English: Skull with mosaic inlay of turkois, shells and mother-of-pearl. Mixtecs/Aztecs, Mexico. Ca. 15th century. State museum of Ethnology, Leiden, The Netherlands. On the forehead of the skull a snake has been depicted. Probably this person had a special connection to the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl, the feathered snake. Mixtec craftsmen were very skilled in the art of making mosaics. Only few objects of their work have been remained.
Español: Cráneo con mosaico de turquesa, conchas y madreperla. Mixtecos/Aztecos, Mejico. Ca. siglo 15. Museo Nacional de Etnologia, Leiden, Paises Bajos. En el frente se vea una serpiente. Probablemente este persona tenia una conneccion especial con la Aztec divinidad Quetzalcoatl 'la Serpiente con alas'. Los Mixtecos tenian conocimiento del ramo de producir mosaicos. Poquisimo de sus trabajos ha dejado para mas tarde.
Français : Crâne incrusté d'une mosaïque de turquoises, coquillages et perles de verre. Artisanat Mixtèques-Aztèques, Mexique, vers le XVe siècle. Visible au musée royal d'ethnologie de Leyde, aux Pays-Bas. Sur le devant du crâne, en haut, on distingue un serpent. Cette personne était probablement liée au dieu Quetzalcoatl, le serpent à plumes. Les Mixtèques maîtrisaient l'art de la mosaïque, mais très peu d'exemples de leur travail sont parvenus jusqu'à nous.

Op het voorhoofd is een slang afgebeeld. Dit kan erop wijzen dat de persoon in verband heeft gestaan met de god Quetzalcoatl, de Gevederde Slang. Mixteekse ambachtslieden waren erg goed in het maken van mozaïeken. Van hun werk is weinig bewaard gebleven. |
