English: View of Khor Ghorera (Yemen) in January 1914. Also known as the lagoon, or lake, of Sheikh Said, it is a long and narrow shallow lagoon on the western side of the Bab el-Mandeb (or Sheikh Said) Peninsula facing the island of Perim. Fish was very abundant and nearly all of the estimated 250 inhabitants of Sheikh Said at the time were fishermen and their families living in thatched huts disseminated along the shore of Khor Ghorera. Several huts are visible across the lake.
A small Turkish garrison occupied Fort Turba at the top of a promontory nearby. The fort was shelled and captured by troops from British India in November 1914.
