English: USCAR: IHA CASTLE RESORT MOTEL, first such western-style resort motel in Okinawa, has been constructed in the Ishikawa Beach Area on the ruins of the once-imposing Iha Castle which overlooked Kin Bay. Shown cutting the ribbon opening the motel are (L-R): Seiko Kohagura, deputy chief executive, Government of the Ryukyu Islands; Mrs. Shizu Iha, president of the motel; and Edward H. Reeves, director, Economic Affairs Dept., U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyu Islands. "In order to visualize the vast economic potential of the tourist business for Okinawa during this jet age, one must consider the rapid progress in this direction already made in other areas such as Hawaii, the Caribbean, and elsewhere, having physical and geographical characteristics similar to those existing here," Mr. Reeves said in his congratulatory address. The motel which boasts, modern food and entertainment facilities, tennis courts, swimming pool and golf course, was constructed at a total cost of $436,000, including a $147,000 loan from the Ryukyu Development Loan Corporation. Okinawa attracted 72,800 visitors who spent an estimated $16.6 million during FT 1966, which represents a 26 percent gain over the 57,800 visitors the year before, and a 6.4 percent gain in expenditures over those estimated in FY 65 at 15.6 million.
