ヒルスコーヒー（英語: Hills Bros. Coffee）はサンフランシスコに本社を置くパッケージコーヒーの製造業者。
歴史[編集]
造船技師オースティン・ヒルスとその息子らが1823年にメイン州ロックランドで創業した企業を母体とする。当初のオースティン・ヒルスの事業は快速船の建造であった。オースティンの3人の息子はオースティン・ハーバート・ヒルス、アーネスト・ヒルス、ルーベン・ウィルマース・ヒルスであったが、オースティンがコーヒー事業に携わったのはごく短期間だけであった[1][2]。コーヒー事業を始めたのは1878年のサンフランシスコでのことであり、1882年には、小売店アラビアンコーヒー・アンド・スパイスミルズの兼営も開始した[3]。
1900年、ヒルスコーヒーは世界で初となる真空包装法による焙煎コーヒーの包装を始めた。1906年に商号をHills Brosに改めた[4]。1926年、ヒルスコーヒーはマーケット通り1146番地からハリソン通り2番地に移転[5]、ジョージ・W・ケルハム設計によるロマネスク様式を模したEmbarcaderoと呼ばれるこの建物はサンフランシスコのランドマークとなっている[6]。ローストコーヒー事業は一時期一帯をコーヒーの香りで満たしたという[7]。この建物は2012年1月、ペンシルバニア大学ウォートン・スクールのサテライトキャンパスとなった[8]。現在、建物にはウォートンの校章が刻まれている。グーグル及びMozilla Corporationも複数のフロアにオフィスを構えている[9]。
コーヒーを飲むアラビア人風の男性が描かれた「テイスター」と呼ばれるシンボルは、サンフランシスコの若手デザイナー、ブリッグズが1906年に書いたものであるが[10]、1990年にオリジナルのデザインから現在のものに刷新されている[11]。1976年、ヒルス兄弟はイタリア系アメリカ人の歌手、セルジョ・フランキーをテレビスポークスマンとして複数の商品を紹介してもらうために起用した[12]。俳優ジョン・ザレンバが1970年代から1980年代初頭まで広告塔として架空のコーヒー豆バイヤーを演じたことは特筆に値する。
第二次世界大戦中にヒルスの容器は金属製のものからガラス瓶に変更された[13]。1984年、チェイス・アンド・サンボーン・コーヒーの商標及び製造工場を買収した[14]。
1985年、ネスレがヒルスを買収したが、1999年、サラ・リーに売却された[1][15]。 2005年、マッシモ・ザネッティに買収された[1]。
