シリル・カートライト (公務員)

シリル・ジョージ・フォックス・カートライト（Cyril George Fox Cartwright、1911年4月18日 - 1943年4月23日）は、イギリス植民地局の管理者である。[1] 日本軍のギルバート諸島占領中に亡くなった。[1][2]

バイオグラフィー[編集]

カートワイトはG.F.カートライト牧師の三男だった。[1] 彼は、1924年から1930年までウィンチェスター大学に通った。その後、オックスフォード大学のベリオール・カレッジに進み、1933年に学位を取得した。彼は英国植民地軍に任命され、[1]オーシャン島に配属された。[3]

1941年12月から1942年8月まで、オーシャン島のギルバートおよびエリス諸島植民地の常駐委員長代理を務めた。彼は常駐委員に任命されていたビビアン・フォックス＝ストラングウェイズの代理を務めていたが、太平洋戦争のためフォックス＝ストラングウェイズは陸軍に出向し、英領ソロモン諸島のツラギ島に駐屯していた。[3][4]

英国リン酸塩委員会の職員が避難した際にオーシャン島を離れる機会もあったが[5]、オーシャン島の人々を守るために残ることを選択した。[1] 日本軍は1942年8月26日にオーシャン島を占領した。彼は虐待と栄養失調にさらされた。[1] 彼は、1943年4月23日に死亡した。[1]

ベリオール・カレッジの東壁にあるチャペル通路の記念碑に彼の名前が刻まれている。[6]
