on theopposite side of the pole is the bright W-shaped groupCassiopeia. Bordering the Greater Bear on the southand east are the very faint little groups of the Lynx orTiger, and the Lesser Lion, while over in the north-west, north of Pegasus, is the Lizard. The Lesser Bearis seen hanging head downward, with the pole star atthe tip of its tail, and near the horizon, in the hollowof The Dipper, are the Himting Dogs, with the brightCor Caroli. On the meridian, between the Charioteer.and the pole, is the barren-looking constellation ofCamelopardalis, the Giraffe, while below the pole,reaching down almost to the northern horizon, is thegreat Dragon. In the south-east, the head of Hydra, thegreat Water-snake, has just risen, soon to be followedby the lonely rusty-looking Alphard, in the reptilesheart. Stretching from the Water-snake to Orionare a number of faint stars, which make up the little-known group of Monoceros, or the Unicom.
