In May 1945, this Nazi flag was found by sapper Harry Mosley, in a town hall in the Wismar region of Germany. The occupants of the building had committed suicide just before the arrival of the Allied soldiers; their cigarettes were still burning in the ashtrays.
The troops of the 6th Airborne Division had been ordered to take Wismar on the Baltic coast to prevent Soviet forces from entering Denmark. Led on motorcycles by General Hill of the 3rd Brigade, this mission was successfully accomplished on May 2, 1945.
Subsequently, General Hill was appointed military governor of Copenhagen until the installation of a civilian administration.
In 2009, the flag was donated to the museum by Harry Mosley's widow.

  • The Sturmabteilung (SA; literally "Storm Detachment") was the original paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party. It played a significant role in Adolf Hitler's rise to power in the 1920s and 1930s. In 1920, Hitler decided that the Nazi Party needed its own insignia and flag, as “a symbol of our own struggle” as well as “highly effective as a poster.”
