パラスクス科の爬虫類は後期三畳紀の堆積層から発見されており、産出地はヨーロッパ、北アメリカ、インド、モロッコ、タイ王国、ブラジル、グリーンランド[1]、マダガスカルがある。パラスクスの骨学的研究に際し、Kammerer et al. (2016) は従来フィトサウルス科に含まれていた分類群だけでなくパラスクスと同等の段階群もパラスクス科に含むものとして、パラスクス科という語を用いている[2]。Stocker et al. (2017) はKammerer et al. (2016) の提唱した分類を用い、パラスクス科に属さない最も基盤的な植竜類としてディアンドンゴスクス(英語版)を扱っている。本属はパラスクス科の属と比較して吻部が短いことが指摘されている[3]。
