このセクションは、天然に存在する同位体核種で置き換えられた有機化合物の一般的な命名法について記述する。これらのルールの適用例は表18に総括的に例示する。加えて、IUPAC命名法1979年版のセクションHに詳細がある。
IUPAC1993勧告の同位体命名法のほかに、一般に知られた方法としてCASインデックスの命名法がある。どちらも Boughton等が提唱した重水素の表記方法を基としている。
