マリオ・ベネデッティ（Mario Orlando Hamlet Hardy Brenno Benedetti Farrugia[1]、1920年9月14日-2009年5月17日[2]）は、ウルグアイのジャーナリスト、小説家、詩人である。英語圏ではあまり知られていないが[3]、スペイン語圏では20世紀のラテンアメリカで最も重要な作家の1人と考えられている。

経歴[編集]

タクアレンボ県のパソ・デ・ロス・トロスで生まれた。1946年にルス・ロペス・アレグレと結婚。軍事独裁政権下にあった1973年から1985年まで、ブエノスアイレス、リマ、ハバナ、スペインに亡命した。民主制が復活すると、モンテビデオとマドリードでの生活を始めた。ウルグアイのリパブリック大学とスペインのアリカンテ大学、バリャドリッド大学から名誉博士号を取得。1986年にはLaureate Of The International Botev Prizeを受賞した。2005年6月7日にはPremio Menendez y Pelayoの受賞者に選ばれた。彼は1992年のアルゼンチン映画The Dark Side of the Heart (El lado oscuro del corazon)の中で、自身の詩のいくつかをドイツ語で朗読している[4]。

2006年1月26日、ベネデッティはガブリエル・ガルシア＝マルケス、エルネスト・サバト、エドゥアルド・ガレアーノ、カルロス・モンシバイス、パブロ・アルマンド・フェルナンデス、ホルヘ・エンリケ・アドウムらとともに、プエルトリコの独立を求める運動に名を連ねた。プエルトリコの独立の活動はプエルトリコ独立党に引き継がれた。

彼は2009年5月17日にモンテビデオで死去した。彼は1年以上、呼吸器疾患と腸の疾患に苦しんでいた[2]。

死の直前、彼は秘書のアリエル・シルヴァに対する口述で次のような最後の詩を残した[5]。
