ハロルド・ニコルソンとヴィタ・サックヴィル＝ウェストのブルー・プラーク。

サー・ハロルド・ジョージ・ニコルソン（英語: Sir Harold George Nicolson, KCVO, CMG, 1886年11月21日 - 1968年5月1日）は、イギリスの外交官、歴史家、政治家、作家、貴族。外交に関する著作のほか、ポール・ヴェルレーヌやバイロンなど作家や詩人の評伝も多数著した。

生涯

テヘラン生まれ。オックスフォード大学ベリオール校卒業後、イギリス外務省に入省し、1929年まで勤務。その間、パリ講和会議にイギリス代表団の一員として参加。1935年から1945年までイギリス下院議員を務めた。

著書『外交』において、公開外交や外交の民主化によって世論の影響力が強まる状況にあって、外交の立法的側面（政策決定）と執行的側面（交渉）を区別し、後者については専門家に任せる必要を説いた。

1953年、ジョージ5世の公式伝記を著した功によりロイヤル・ヴィクトリア勲章ナイト・コマンダーに叙され、ナイトとなる。その伝記は小泉信三により、平成の天皇となった明仁親王の帝王教育に用いられた。

父は外務事務次官を務めたアーサー・カーノック。ブルームズベリー・グループの文人とも交流を重ねる知識人だった。妻ヴィタ・サックヴィル＝ウェストは詩人・作家で、そのグループの中心人物だった。長男ベネディクトは芸術史研究者、次男ナイジェルは伝記作家で、母の伝記も著している。
