エドムンド・ランドルト（Edmund Landolt、1846年5月17日 - 1926年5月9日）は、パリで活動したスイスの眼科医。主に眼科学の分野における広範囲の著作物及び研究で知られる。日本では視力検査に用いるランドルト環の考案者として有名である。

生い立ち[編集]

スイスのKirchbergでフランス人の母Rosina Baumgartnerとスイス人の父Rudolf Landoltに間に生まれる。

1871年の戦争の際にスイス遊動病院とともにフランスに来て、ベルフォート包囲に参加した。そこでは腸チフスにかかっている。

研究[編集]

1869年にチューリッヒ大学でPh.D.を取得し、この時までとそれ以降、ハイデルベルクのクナップ、ウィーンのアールト、ベルリンのグレーフェとヘルムホルツ、チューリッヒのホルネル、ユトレヒトのHerman Snellenとフランシスクス・ドンデルスの生徒であった。

Snellenやドンデルスとともに生理光学の研究を行った。

ユトレヒトとドイツで勉強と訓練ののち、1874年にパリで開業し、国立青少年盲学校（Institut National des Jeunes Aveugles）の検眼医となった。

Photinos Panas（1832–1903）とAntonin Poncet（1849–1913）とともに眼科学の雑誌"Archives d'ophtalmologie"を再建し、1881年にLouis Émile JavalとともにLaboratoire d’Ophtalmologieを共同で指揮した。

Saint-André-des-Arts通りにあるランドルトの眼科は世界的に有名であった。メアリー・カサットを診断し[2]、白内障だと判定している。

特別な研究分野[編集]

眼筋及びその障害を研究した。この分野の研究と治療の先駆的存在であった。

網膜の外顆粒層の桿体細胞と錐体細胞の間にある「ランドルト体」[3]を発見し、外眼筋の機能を研究し、新たに進歩した手術を考案した。

血縁[編集]

妻はValerie Hübscherである。息子は2人おり、Fernand Landoltは咽頭科医、Marc Landoltは眼科医になっている。

交友[編集]

作家であり医師でもあったアーサー・コナン・ドイルはウィーンでの眼科学に関する研究の際に、パリでランドルトとともに過ごしていた[4]。
