血のワシ
血のワシ(ちのワシ)は、後期スカルド詩に語られる儀式的な処刑法である。
サガで語られる例によれば、犠牲者をうつ伏せに寝かせ、刃物で肋骨を脊椎から切り離し、生きたまま肺を背中から体外に引きずりだして鳥の翼のように広げるという。
さらに、苦痛を増大させるために塩がふりかけられる事もあったという。
この処刑法が文学上のフィクションなのか、それとも原文の誤訳に過ぎないのか、あるいは現実に行われていたものなのかは、未だに結論は出ていない[1][2][3]。ただし、キリスト教化以前のスカンジナビア半島において何らかの生贄の儀式が行われていたのは事実である[4]。
文献の記述
[編集]「血のワシ」の儀式について具体的に記述されているものは北欧文学において二つの例が確認される。二つの例においては、犠牲者は貴人であり(長脛のハールフダンはハーラル1世の息子であり、エッラはノーサンブリアの王であった)、父親を殺されたことの報復として儀式が行われる、という共通点が存在する。この刑罰は『ヘイムスクリングラ』をはじめ、多くのサガなどで言及される[5]。
レギンとリュングヴィ
[編集]シグルズ伝説の一部であり、ニーベルンゲン伝説へとつながる10世紀半ばに成立した『レギンの歌』でもまた血のワシの刑罰について言及されている[6]。
「レギンの歌」はシグルズが父シグムンドの仇としてリュングヴィ王らを討ったことについてレギンが次のように語って終わる。

リュングヴィ討伐じたいについては、『ヴォルスンガ・サガ』に詳しいが[12]、血の鷲の刑罰の言及は見当たらない[13]。しかし、『ノルナゲストの話』(14世紀初期)にその詳述が記されており[14]、シグルズの部下であるノルナゲストみずから、レギンにその剣を手渡すと、レギンはリュングヴィの背骨から肋骨を切り離し、肺臓を取り出して「血の鷲」の儀式をおこなったとされている[16][7][17][注 1]。
エイナルとハールフダン
[編集]『オークニーの人々のサガ』では「血のワシ」はオーディンに人身御供を捧げる儀式であるとされている。トルフ・エイナルはハーラル1世の息子長脛のハールフダンをこの儀式で殺害している。
スノッリ・ストゥルルソンの『ヘイムスクリングラ』は『オークニーの人々のサガ』に記されたものと同じ出来事の記述を含むが、ここではエイナルは実際に彼自身の手によってハールフダンに「血のワシ」の儀式を施したのだとされる。
Þá gékk Einarr jarl til Hálfdanar; hann reist örn á baki honum með þeima hætti, at hann lagði sverði á hol við hrygginn ok reist rifin öll ofan alt á lendar, dró þar út lungun; var þat bani Hálfdanar.[21] それからエイナル侯はハルヴダンに歩みより、剣を背骨のわきの空洞部に差し込み、上から腰まで肋骨を全て切り裂き、そこから肺を引っ張り出すというやり方で〈血鷲の刑〉を実行した。それがハルヴダンの死であった[22]。
イーヴァルとエッラ王
[編集]『ラグナルの息子たちの話』では、ラグナル・ロズブロークがエッラに殺害されたため、ラグナルの息子骨無しのイーヴァルはエッラを捕らえる。ヨークの支配権を巡る戦いの後に起きたエッラの殺害について、以下のように記されている。
『ラグナル・ロズブロークのサガ』によれば、イーヴァルは、木の彫刻が巧みな者を選んで「血の鷲」を刻ませる作業にあたらせた[27]。
この際に「血の鷲」が刻まれたことは、11世紀のスカルド詩人シグヴァト・ソルザルソンが歌っており(前出の『ラグナルの息子たちの話』にも引用される[23])。『クヌート頌歌』[仮訳題名] (Knútsdrápa) に収められる[28]:

サクソ・グラマティクス 著の『デンマーク人の事蹟』では、ラグナル・ロズブロークの息子たちの名をビョルンやシグヴァルドであるとしたうえで、エッラ王に対し:
Idque statuto tempore exsecuti, comprehensi ipsius dorsum plaga aquilam figurante affici iubent, saevissimum hostem atrocissimi alitis signo profligare gaudentes. Nec vulnus impressisse contenti, laceratam salivere carnem.[30]定めた時刻にかくのごとく執行した、すなわち[王を]捕縛し、その背に鷲の形の切りこみを加えるよう命じた。残忍きわまる鳥類の印を、最も暴虐たる敵に刻み付けることを驚喜した。傷を負わせただけでは飽き足らず、引き裂かれた肉体に塩を擦りこんだ
