新国際百科事典

『新国際百科事典』（しんこくさいひゃっかじてん、The New International Encyclopedia）は、1902年にアメリカ合衆国のドッド＝ミード社社から出版された百科事典である。

歴史

初版の第8巻

『新国際百科事典』は、1884年の『国際百科事典』(International Cyclopaedia)の後継となる百科事典である。当初『国際百科事典』は、イギリスの『チェンバーズ百科事典』のアメリカ版であるオールデンの"Library of Universal Knowledge"を元に作成していた。1902年、ハリー・サーストン・ペック、ダニエル・コイト・ギルマン、フランク・ムーア・コルビーの3人が編集者となり、『新国際百科事典』と改題された。

この百科事典は人気となり、1904年、1905年、1907年（修正・増補して20巻）、1909年、1911年に再版が行われた。第2版は1914年から1917年にかけて全24巻で刊行された。ペックとギルマンが亡くなった後、タルコット・ウィリアムスが新しい編集者として加わった。第2版は新しい活字で組まれ、徹底的に改訂された。人物伝に強いのが特徴である。

1923年に第3版が第24巻で出版されたが、内容はほぼ第2版のままであり、それまでの読書・学習ガイドに変わって第一次世界大戦の歴史が追加されている。1925年には2巻の付録が出版され、1927年の再版時には付録が組み込まれて全25巻となった。1930年の再版時には2巻の追補版が追加されている。

この百科事典の版権は1931年にファンク・アンド・ワグネル社に売却され、同社が1935年に発行したものが最終版となった。この版には、ハーバート・トレッドウェル・ウェイドが執筆した補足資料が含まれていた。その後、『新国際百科事典』の内容は、その一部がファンク・アンド・ワグネル社が出版する"Funk & Wagnalls Standard Encyclopaedia"などの書籍に取り入れられた。

当時の他の百科事典と同様に、『新国際百科事典』には1908年から『新国際年鑑』(The New International Yearbook)という年刊の付録がついていた。この年鑑の版権も、百科事典と同様に1931年にファンク・アンド・ワグネル社に売却された。年鑑は、当初はフランク・ムーア・コルビーが編集し、1925年にコルビーが亡くなった後はハーバート・トレッドウェル・ウェイドが引き継いだ。1937年からはフランク・ホレス・ヴィゼテリーが編集者となった。この年鑑は百科事典が廃刊となった後も生き残り、1966年まで刊行された。

『新国際百科事典』には500人以上が寄稿していた。
