ルース・フィネガン

ルース・ヒラリー・フィネガン（Ruth Hilary Finnegan OBEFBA、1933年9月30日 - ）は、北アイルランド出身の言語人類学者、オープン大学名誉教授[1][2]。

経歴

フィネガンは、1933年にロンドンデリーで生まれた。ロンドンデリー・ハイ・スクール（Londonderry High School、後のフォイル・カレッジ (Foyle College)）とヨークのザ・マウント・スクール (The Mount School) に学び[3]、オックスフォード大学サマーヴィル・カレッジで、西洋古典学を修めるリテラエ・フマニオレス (Literae humaniores)、通称グレイツ (Greats) を学び、後には人類学で PhD を取得した[1]。ナフィールド・カレッジ (Nuffield College) から1963年に提出された学位論文の題は、「The Limba of Sierra Leone with special reference to their folktales or "oral literature"」（シエラレオネのリンバ族、特に彼らの民話や「口承文学」について）であった[4]。

1963年から1964年にかけてジンバブエのジンバブエ大学（英語版）で社会人類学を、1965年から1967年にかけてまでナイジェリアのイバダン大学で社会学を教えた後、フィネガンは1969年にオープン大学の創設時の教授陣に加わった[1]。1972年までは社会学の講師 (lecturer) であったが、1982年には比較社会体制論 (comparative social institutes) の準教授 (reader) となり、1988年に教授に昇任した[5]。フィネガンは、1989年には、テキサス大学オースティン校の人類学の客員教授となった。

フィネガンは、1996年にイギリス学士院フェローに選出された[1]。2000年の新年叙勲（英語版）の際には、社会科学への貢献により大英帝国勲章（OBE）を授与された。彼女は、オックスフォード大学サマーヴィル・カレッジの名誉フェローでもある[5]。2016年には、英国王立人類学協会（英語版）からリヴァーズ記念メダル (Rivers Memorial Medal) を授与された[6]。
