メクラヘビ科（Typhlopidae）はメクラヘビ類の科[3]。ほとんどがアフリカ、アジア、アメリカ、オーストラリア及び周辺の島々の熱帯域に分布する[4]。吻側の鱗は口から張り出し、シャベルのような穴を掘る構造をしている。地下の巣穴に生息し、視力を持たないため、目はほとんど痕跡的に存在するに過ぎない。光を感知する黒い眼斑があり、上顎に歯が生えている。脱臼可能な下顎の関節がなく、獲物は口の開口部よりも小さなものに制限される[5]。尾は角のような鱗で終わる。ほとんどの種で卵生。 現在、200種以上を含む18属が記載されている[3][6]。
分布[編集]
ほとんどの種が、世界中、特に、アフリカ、アジア、太平洋諸島、アメリカ大陸、南東ヨーロッパの熱帯・亜熱帯に生息[1]。
化石記録[編集]
Dominican amberの中からメクラヘビ科と思われる化石が産出している[7]。

Xenotyphlops属はかつてはメクラヘビ科に分類されていたが、現在は Xenotyphlopidae科に分類される。
