オージェイズ (The O'Jays) は、アメリカのオハイオ州で1958年に結成されたソウル・トリオである。
キャリア
[編集]1950年代末から活動を始め、ザ・マスコッツなど複数のグループ名を名乗った後、オージェイズに改名している。その後、スウィート・ソウル的な曲をリリースするなどしたが、ヒットには至らず苦節10年以上を経て、1972年ごろより世界的に知られるようになった。
ギャンブル&ハフの制作により、フィラデルフィア・インターナショナルからリリースした「裏切り者のテーマ」(1972)が初のヒット曲となり、その後も「ラヴ・トレイン」(1973)などが、ポップ・チャートでのクロスオーバー・ヒットとなった。他に「フォー・ザ・ラブ・オブ・マネー」「アイ・ラブ・ミュージック」(1976)「ユースタ・ビー・マイ・ガール」(1978)「ワット・ア・ウーマン」「ジャスト・アナザー・ロンリー・ナイト」「ラヴィン・ユー」などの代表曲がある。彼らの曲「ナウ・ザット・ウイ・ファウンド・ラブ」を、レゲエのサード・ワールドが1978年にカバーしている。
ソウル・チャートでは1980年代後半から1990年代初頭になってもヒットを出すなど、息の長いトリオだった。オージェイズは2回、グラミー・ホール・オブ・フェイムに記録されている。[1]
リーダーのエディ・レヴァートの息子のジェラルド・レヴァートも「レヴァート」として86年からヒットを出し活躍していたが、2006年、父親よりも先に若くして亡くなる。
2021年になり、1982年にオハイオ州のツインズバーグ市の工場の裏のゴミ袋から見つかった遺体の身元が、DNA鑑定により旧メンバーのフランク・リトル・Jrのものであることが確認された[2]。
