アンテオサウルス学名Anteosaurus)は、ディノケファルス類に属する絶滅した大型の肉食単弓類。約2億6200万年前から約2億6000万年前にあたる中期ペルム紀のキャピタニアン期において、現在の南アフリカ共和国付近に生息した。Tapinocephalus Assemblage Zoneの岩石で発見された頭骨およびごく少数の体骨格から知られる。全長約5 - 6メートル、体重約600キログラムと推定されており、既知の範囲内で最大の非哺乳類型単弓類かつペルム紀における最大の陸上捕食動物である。中期ペルム紀における食物連鎖の頂点の地位を占めており、そのタピノケファルス科英語版パレイアサウルス形類英語版といった大型の獲物の捕食に適応している。

アンテオサウルスは1921年に命名されたが、学名の語源は明かされていない。Ben Creislerによると、属名はギリシア神話ヘラクレスと敵対したアンタイオスに由来する可能性がある[1]

分類と系統

アンテオサウルスはWatson (1921)により命名され、ティタノスクス類のディノケファルス類として分類された。Boonstra (1954)はティタノスクス類をJonkeridae(ティタノスクス科の新参異名)とアンテオサウルス科の2科に細分した[2][3]。ほぼ同時期にYefremov (1954)は新科Brithopodidaeを設立し、断片的なBrithopus、より知られているSyodonTitanophoneusを同科に含めた[4]

その後Hopson and Barghusen (1986)はBrithopodidaeを解体し、SyodonTitanophoneusおよびDoliosauriscusをアンテオサウルスとともにアンテオサウルス類英語版のアンテオサウルス科に分類し、タピノケファルス類と区別すべきであるとした。またHopson and Barghusen (1986)はアンテオサウルスとTitanophoneusおよびDoliosauriscusを含むアンテオサウルス亜科、アンテオサウルスとDoliosauriscusを含むアンテオサウルス族を新設した[5]

Gilian Kingは誤って綴られた'Brithopidae'('Brithopinae'およびアンテオサウルス亜科を含む)を保持し、BrithopidaeおよびTitanosuchidaeをアンテオサウルス上科に分類した[6]。Ivakhnenko (1995)はBrithopodidaeを無効名と見なし、アンテオサウルス科とDeuterosauridae(Deuterosaurusのみを含む単型の科)をDeuterosauroideaに分類した[7][8]。Kammerer (2011)はアンテオサウルス類の分類の再検討を行い、DoliosauriscusTitanophoneusの新参異名、Brithopusエステメンノスクス科英語版に似たタピノケファルス類や未同定のアンテオサウルス類の化石からなるゴミ箱分類群および疑問名とし、Brithopodidaeも無効名とした[9]

以下は、中華人民共和国甘粛省から産出したSinophoneusの再記載に際する、Liu (2013)による系統解析の結果である[10]

獣弓類

シノニム

Boonstra (1969)は、眼窩の背後側の縁に張り出した様々な大きさの突起を後前頭骨に持つアンテオサウルス科の属としてアンテオサウルスを定義した。これによりTapinocephalus zoneから化石が産出した6属(EccasaurusAnteosaurusTitanognathusDinosuchusMicranteosaurusPseudanteosaurus)を同一の属とした。これらのうちDinosuchusおよびTitanognathusは確実にアンテオサウルスの新参異名とされ、Eccasaurusはホロタイプ標本が典型的なアンテオサウルス科の切歯しか含まない頭骨からなるため科レベルでの同定が限界とされ、PseudanteosaurusおよびMicranteosaurusも小型の若いアンテオサウルスの標本と解釈された[11]。なおBoonstra (1969)はParanteosaurusの後前頭骨が発達した隆起を持たないことからこれを有効名とした[11]。Kammerer (2011)はアンテオサウルスの後前頭骨の隆起に大小様々な標本の間で変異が認められること、およびParanteosaurus頭蓋天井英語版が浸食を受けていることから、Paranteosaurusをアンテオサウルスのジュニアシノニムとした[9]

またアンテオサウルス族には様々な種がかつて分類されていたが、これらはA. magnificusの異なる個体成長段階を代表するものと解釈されている[11][9]。Boonstra (1969)はA. magnificusのジュニアシノニムとしてA. abeliA. acutirostrusA. crassifronsA. cruentusA. laticepsA. levopsA. lotziA. majorA. minorA. minusculusA. parvusA. priscusA. vorsteriを列挙した[11]

潜在的なシノニム

Archaeosuchus cairncrossiTapinocephalus Assemblage Zoneから産出した疑問名のアンテオサウルス類であり、Broom (1905)により部分的な上顎骨に基づいて命名されている。本種はBoonstraによりティタノスクス科の動物として解釈されたが、Kammerer (2011)は当該分類群をアンテオサウルスおよびティタノフォネウスから区別不能であるとした。Anteosaurus magnificusTapinocephalus Assemblage Zoneから産する唯一の大型アンテオサウルス類であるため、Archaeosuchus cairncrossiも本種の標本である可能性が高いが、保存が劣悪であるため両者の関係を証明できる特徴が存在しない[9]

Eccasaurus priscusもまた、Tapinocephalus Assemblage Zoneから産する疑問名のアンテオサウルス類の種である。本種はBroom (1909)により断片的な骨格に基づいて命名されており、上腕骨しか記載されていない。Archaeosuchus cairncrossiと同様にE. priscusAnteosaurus magnificusである可能性が高い。この場合、Eccasaurusという属名がAnteosaurusという属名に対して優先権を持つため、アンテオサウルスの名前を残す場合には動物命名法国際審議会への請願が必要となる[9]

特徴

アンテオサウルスは既知の範囲内において最大の肉食性非哺乳類型単弓類であり、全長約5 - 6メートル、体重約400 - 600キログラムと推定される[12][13][14]。幼体の標本 BP/1/7074 は体重約71キログラムと推定され、成獣との顕著な体サイズ差が示されている[15]

頭骨

アンテオサウルスの頭骨は大型である。最大の標本(TM265およびSAM-PK-11293)は80 - 90センチメートルに達しており、また重厚な頭蓋天井には発達した隆起が備わる[16][3][17]。頭骨の主な特徴は、外側に突出した強固な角状の隆起を形成する後前頭骨である。これとは別に、下顎を構成する角骨にも特徴的な楕円形の隆起が存在しており、長さと厚みがほぼ同程度であり、前後の縁が鈍い。多少発達した隆起を頬骨に持つと見られる個体も存在する。他のアンテオサウルス科獣弓類と同様に、眼窩の後側に位置するpostorbital barは強く前腹側に湾曲し、側頭窓が眼窩の下部を切り取っている。アンテオサウルス類の他の典型的な特徴には上顎骨の腹側縁に対して約30 - 35°の角度をなして上に向いた前上顎骨が挙げられるが、前上顎骨の腹側縁が直線状である他の大半のアンテオサウルス類と異なり、アンテオサウルスの前上顎骨は前端が腹側に湾曲するため犬歯の前側の歯槽縁が凹状となる。また頭骨は吻部背側の輪郭が窪んでいる。頭骨の頂端にはpineal bossが頭頂骨によって広く形成されており、特にArchaeosyodonSinophoneusのような基盤的なアンテオサウルス類と共通する(シオドン亜科においてこの隆起は前頭骨と頭頂骨の両方にとって形成される)。シオドン亜科と異なり、アンテオサウルス亜科の頭頂骨とpineal bossは下顎内転筋の付着部に参加しない[9]。口蓋では翼状骨の横突起が遠位端において大きく発達しており、腹側から見ると葉形をなす。これはTitanophoneusSinophoneusと同様である。他のアンテオサウルス類と同様に、2つの発達した口蓋の隆起には複数の小型の歯が並んでいる[16][3]。アンテオサウルス(および他のアンテオサウルス亜科)において口蓋の隆起は互いに隔てられているが、シオドン亜科の口蓋の隆起は非常に近接しているか接続している[18][17]

アンテオサウルス科のエンドキャスト英語版の容積の約48%は、神経組織英語版以外が占めていたと推定されている[14]

体骨格

アンテオサウルスの体骨格要素は非常にまれであり、完全な骨格は知られていない。発見されている骨は、まとまった骨あるいは単独で産出した骨(肩帯腰帯・四肢およびいくつかの椎骨)が知られ、関節した骨も発見されているもののより希少である[19][20][21]。幼体の関節した左手から、前肢の指式は哺乳類と同様に2-3-3-3-3であったことが判明している[21]。Lieuwe Dirk Boonstraはこの左手を右手として同定し、さらに第3指に4個の指骨が含まれるとしたが[19][20][22]、後にTim RoweとJ.A. van den Heever が第3指に含まれる指骨を3個として指摘した[21]。第1指は他の指よりも遥かに小型であり、第3指から第4指が最も長く、第5指が最も頑強である。足は部分的にしか知られていないが、同様に小型の第1趾を有することが判明している[22][21]。ロシア産アンテオサウルス類であるTitanophoneusの完全な骨格に基づき、アンテオサウルスは四肢が長く、また半直立姿勢を取ったと考えられている。尾はタピノケファルス科に属する植物食性のディノケファルス類のものよりも長い[23][24]

古生物学

アンテオサウルスの頭骨には、その比率や骨の肥厚の程度に関して広範なバリエーションが見られる。特に後前頭骨の「角」と前頭骨の上部の隆起は発達の度合いが標本間で異なる。角と隆起が共に強く肥厚したものもあれば、角が発達する一方で隆起が発達しないか持たないもの、あるいは角も隆起も発達が弱いものもある。骨が肥厚した標本においても個体間のバリエーションがあり、隆起と比較して相対的に小型の角を持つものや、非常に巨大な角を持つものがある。これらのバリエーションの一部は個体発生学的変化に起因するとされ、また成獣の標本に見られるバリエーションは性的二形による可能性がある[25][9]

ディノケファルス類が行っていたと見られる頭突きや、犬歯を用いた実演に基づき、アンテオサウルスが敵対行動を示していたと考える研究者は多い。Barghusen (1975)によると、巨大な犬歯と切歯を種内闘争に用いた場合両個体が甚大な損傷を負うことから、アンテオサウルスの種内闘争において歯は用いられなかった。その代わりにアンテオサウルスは頭突きを採用し、闘争における致命傷のリスクを低減していた。頭突きに際して頭蓋天井が接する領域には、鼻骨の後部の大部分、前前頭骨の一部、前頭骨および後前頭骨の全体が含まれる。厚みを増して外側に張り出した後前頭骨の角状の隆起は、相手の頭部がもう一方の頭部をすり抜ける可能性を低下させた[25]

Benoit et al. (2021)は、アンテオサウルスが自然な姿勢を取った場合、その頭部がタピノケファルス科のものと異なり下側に傾斜しており、脊柱との理想的な位置関係にないため、同属が頭突きによる闘争に特化していないとした。タピノケファルス科と比較して骨の肥厚が発達していないことや、大型の犬歯を持つことから、Benoit et al. (2021)はアンテオサウルスが大型の犬歯による誇示や咬合といった他の敵対行動を行っていたと提唱した[15]

Christian Kammererによれば、アンテオサウルスは骨が肥厚することにより、大型の獲物に噛みつく際に強力な外側内転筋により生み出される頭骨への応力への耐久力が向上していた。これはルビジェア亜科に属するゴルゴノプス類や、モササウルス科タラットスクス類セベコスクス類ラウイスクス類および大型肉食獣脚類といった様々な大型捕食者と共通する[9][17]。ただし、肥厚した骨が他の用途を有していたこと、またタピノケファルス類よりも省エネルギーで頭突きを可能にした可能性までは否定されていない[9][15]

個体発生

Kruger et al. (2016)はアンテオサウルスの幼獣の標本BP/1/7074を記載し、詳細な個体成長段階を明らかにした。他の標本とのアロメトリー分析から、アンテオサウルスは頭頂部が急成長し、幼獣と成獣との間でpostorbital barおよびsuborbital barの発達度合いに重大な差異を持つこと、および成長過程で急激な骨の肥厚が生じて最終的に成獣の頭蓋天井が形成されることが示された。骨の肥厚は前頭骨や後前頭骨といった重要な骨で生じている。こうした特徴が幼獣と成獣との極端な差異として表れているとされた[26]

Bhat et al. (2021)はアンテオサウルス属に分類されている複数の骨格の組織学的研究を行い、3つの成長段階が存在することを明らかにした。第一段階は血管が豊富な線維層板状の骨組織に代表される。皮質骨における血管新生が活発であったと見られ、個体成長の初期において新たな骨が急速に形成されていたことを示唆する。第二段階は骨形成の周期的あるいは季節的な中断に代表され、成長停止線により示唆される。第三段階は皮質骨の末端部に成長停止線を持つ発達した層状の骨に代表され、アンテオサウルスの成長速度が高齢期に減速したことが示唆される[27]

生息地と食性

Boonstra (1954)によれば、アンテオサウルスの全体的な歯列は、発達した犬歯、長い切歯、比較的弱いpostcanines(犬歯よりも後側の歯)によって特徴づけられる。この形状は食餌の際に咀嚼や剪断に頼るのでなく、獲物から肉を引き裂くことに適していた。加えてBoonstra (1954)は消費された肉の一部が反曲した口蓋の歯列によって保持されたり切り裂かれたりしていた可能性が高いと指摘した[3]。Boonstra (1955)は主に股関節と大腿骨の形態に基づき、アンテオサウルス科が現生のワニに似た這い歩き型の移動運動をしていたことを示唆し、半水棲生活に便利であったとした[28]

Ivakhnenko (2008)はペルム紀の獣弓類の頭骨を研究し、アンテオサウルスを代表とするアンテオサウルス類が現生のカワウソのような半水棲の魚食性の単弓類であったとした[29]。Kammerer (2011)は提唱された仮説を疑問視し、アンテオサウルス類の解剖学的特徴がそうした生態と整合しないことを指摘した。典型的な魚食性動物は魚類の捕獲に適した非常に鋭利で長い反曲した無数の歯を持つが、アンテオサウルス類の歯は丸く、鈍く、犬歯のみ反曲する。また魚食性動物の顎は一般的に細長く、水の抵抗を低減しながら魚類を捕食することが可能であるが、アンテオサウルス類の顎は背腹方向に発達しており、非常に頑強である。Kammerer (2011)は、ティタノスクス科英語版やタピノケファルス科といった同時代の大型陸棲ディノケファルス類を捕食していた可能性が高いと提唱した。また歯の頑強な基部や斜めの鋸歯といったアンテオサウルス類の歯の形状が大型のティラノサウルス科のものと類似していることから、骨を噛み砕く動作がアンテオサウルス類においてもその食餌行動の主要な要素になっていた可能性があると指摘した[9]

Rey et al. (2020)は、テロケファルス類とパレイアサウルス類の歯や骨から得られたリン酸塩酸素同位体比を分析し、生時においてどれほど水に依存していたかを推定した。得られた結果より、テロケファルス類とパレイアサウルス類のδ18O値は現生の陸上動物の範囲内に収まっており、これらの動物が陸上環境に生息していたことを示唆した。ただし、アンテオサウルスではδ18O値がわずかに低下しており、この解釈に疑問が投げかけられている。Rey et al. (2020)はよりサンプルサイズを増大させることでアンテオサウルスに関してより堅実な結論を導くことができると結論した[30]

Bhat et al. (2021)は、アンテオサウルスの骨格要素の大部分が肥厚した骨壁、広範囲にわたる二次的な骨のリモデリング、および髄腔の完全な充填によって特徴づけられることを指摘した。これらの特徴はアンテオサウルスが陸上生活に適応していたことを示唆するものである。ただし、橈骨大腿骨には開けた髄腔が存在しており、骨梁が内部を支持している。Bhat et al. (2021)はアンテオサウルスが現生のカバのように、短期間だけ存在する浅い沼沢に時折生息することがあった可能性を示唆した[27]

Benoit et al. (2021)によるアンテオサウルスの幼獣の標本 BP/1/7074 の詳細な研究では、アンテオサウルスがワニのような鈍重な捕食者であったという見解が否定された。当該研究ではX線イメージングと3D復元が行われ、アンテオサウルスの内耳が近縁種や競合する種のものよりも大型であること、目の動きと頭部の動きとを協調させる脳の領域が非常に発達していることが明らかにされた。こうした特徴は陸上の獲物を追跡する能力に長けていたことを示唆する[15]

代謝

Rey et al. (2017)は酸素同位体比を利用して獣弓類の熱代謝を研究し、アンテオサウルスおよび同時期の獣弓類のδ18O値を外温動物に相当するものとした[31]。Araújo et al. (2022)による骨迷路と半規管の研究では、新獣弓類に属さない獣弓類の体温は24.2 - 29.0℃と復元され、ディノケファルス類が外温動物であったことが示唆された[32]

地理的・層序的範囲

南アフリカ

Anteosaurus magnificusの化石は南アフリカ共和国カルー盆地に分布するビューフォート層群英語版アブラハムスクラール層英語版およびティークルーフ層英語版基底から産出する。同種はアブラハムスクラール層中部(Koornplaats部層)で出現し、同層のより上部の層(Swaerskraal部層・Moordenaars部層・Karelskraal部層)でも継続して産出し、産出レンジの最上位はティークルーフ層基底(Poortjie部層下部)となる[33][34]。30を超える産地が知られており、その大半は西ケープ州ビューフォート・ウェスト英語版プリンス・アルバート英語版レイングスバーグ英語版)に局所的に位置する。一部の産地は北ケープ州南端のサザーランド英語版フレーザーバーグ英語版に位置する[3][35][9]東ケープ州マカンダでも少なくとも1個の標本(BP/1/7061)が発見された[36][注 1]。また同州では暫定的にアンテオサウルスの幼獣の標本とされた頭骨も2001年に発見されたが[38][39]、完全なプレパレーションが行われた後、当該の頭骨はタピノケファルス科のディノケファルス類のものであると判明した[40][注 2]

中部ペルム系のアブラハムスクラール層は生層序学的に2つの動物化石帯に細分される。古いものはウォーディアン階のEodicynodon Assemblage Zone、より新しいものは主にキャピタニアン階にあたるTapinocephalus Assemblage Zoneである。アンテオサウルスが属する後者はディノケファルス類の化石が豊富であり、またその多様性も高い。この化石帯は2020年以降下位のEosimops - Glanosuchus subzoneおよび上位のDiictodon - Styracocephalus subzoneの2つのサブゾーンに細分されており、そのいずれもがアンテオサウルスの化石を保存している[33]。他の全ての南アフリカ産ディノケファルス類と同様にアンテオサウルスはアブラハムスクラール層の最上部で絶滅を迎えたと考えられていたが、アンテオサウルスおよび他の2属のディノケファルス類(TitanosuchusおよびCriocephalosaurus)の化石が上位層であるティークルーフ層のPoortjie部層の基底で発見された。これらの発見により、これら3属のディノケファルス類の生層序学的範囲が大幅に拡大し、Tapinocephalus Assemblage Zoneの上限もティークルーフ層の基底に達した[42][34]

上述した3属のディノケファルス類の化石は260.259 ± 0.081 Maの年代測定値が得られている層準の約30メートル上位で産出しており、後期キャピタニアン期のものとされる[34]。他の放射性年代測定によれば、Tapinocephalus Assemblage Zoneの基底は264.382 ± 0.073 Ma よりも古く、また2つのサブゾーンの境界は262.03 ± 0.15 Maと推定される[43]。アブラハムスクラール層の上部(Karelskraal部層最上部)は260.226 ± 0.069 Maとされ、ティークルーフ層基底の年代260.259 ± 0.081 Maと整合的である[43]。これらの年代測定から、Tapinocephalus Assemblage Zone はウォーディアン期から後期キャピタニアン期にあたることが示唆される(2020年にテキサス州西部のグアダルプ山脈英語版のタイプ産地で得られたグアダルピアン世の放射年代に基づく)[43][44]

ロシアでの産出

アンテオサウルスのものである可能性のある化石はロシアからも産出しており、19世紀に断片的な頭骨がタタールスタン共和国のAlexeyevsky地方 (en) で発見されている。当該標本は当初Oudenodon rugosusと命名されたディキノドン類の吻部の隆起と解釈され、後にイワン・エフレーモフによりアンテオサウルス科の角骨の隆起として同定された。この隆起の形状が他のロシア産のアンテオサウルス科と明確に異なっていたため、当該標本はTitanophoneus属の新種(Titanophoneus rugosus)として同定された。その後、Kammerer (2011)はこの隆起の形状がロシア産のT. potensT. adamanteusのものと顕著に異なることを指摘し、T. rugosusの隆起がアンテオサウルスのものと酷似することから、当該種がロシアから産出した最初のアンテオサウルスである可能性を指摘した。一方で隆起上の皮膚は皺が発達しており、これは保存状態が良好なA. magnificusの標本に見られるものと異なる。Kammerer (2011)は、アンテオサウルスの個体間における皮膚の多様性の程度が不明であることからTitanophoneus rugosusをアンテオサウルス属未定種の可能性のある疑問名と見なすことが合理的であると判断した[9]

古環境

古地理および古気候

アンテオサウルスが生息した時代にはパンゲア大陸と呼称される巨大な陸塊が存在した。パンゲア大陸はC字型をなしており、北部(ローラシア大陸)と南部(ゴンドワナ大陸)は西側で接続した一方、東側においてテチス海により隔離されていた[45]。テチス海はキンメリア英語版と呼称される一連の小大陸群によって南北に隔たれており、北側が古テチス海、南側が新テチス海である[46]。後に南アフリカ共和国のカルー盆地となる地域は現在よりも遥か南に位置しており、南緯60度線付近に存在した[47]

南極圏に近接していながら、ペルム紀の大部分の時代においてカルー地域は温帯気候に属し、明確な季節を有した[48][49][50]。カルー地域は後期石炭紀において後期古生代の氷河期英語版を経験した後[51]、前期ペルム紀において氷河が後退し、BotrychiopsisGangamopterisが支配的なツンドラタイガに類似する植生が出現した[52]。さらにその後にはより温暖かつより湿潤な気候条件が成立し、メソサウルス動物群やグロッソプテリス植物群が繁栄するようになった[51]

カルー地域の当時の古気候は、研究者によって異なる結果が示されている。Plumstead (1957)はカルー地域を現代のシベリアカナダになぞらえ、季節性に富んだ気候であり、温暖な夏と厳冬によってグロッソプテリスをはじめとする植物相が盆地に限って生育したとした[53]。主に気候モデルに基づく後続研究においても同様に、夏の気温が15 - 20℃、冬の気温が-20 - -25℃となる熱振幅を持つ冷温帯の気候が示唆された[54][55]。その後の研究でも冷温帯気候が示唆されているが、先行研究で示唆されたほど厳しい冬でなかったと提唱されている。Yemane (1993)は当時の南アフリカ全域に存在した水系や数多くの巨大な湖沼がペルム紀の大部分において大陸性気候を低減したとし[56]、植物のや化石樹木の年輪に焦点を当てた古植物学的研究でも季節性のある気候が示唆されている[49][47]。Rayner (1996)の古植物学的研究によれば、カルー地域は夏の最高気温が30℃程度で、冬はが降りることが無かった[49]。南半球の高緯度地域は非常に高温で湿潤な夏を経験しており、4ヶ月を超過する期間にわたって平均18時間の日照時間があり、その期間の降水量が現在の熱帯地域における年間降水量に匹敵した。こうした状況はグロッソプテリスのような植物の急成長に適しており、グロッソプテリスは寒さよりも冬季における短い日照時間を要因として落葉したと見られている[49]。カルー地域の堆積物を対象とする地球化学的研究では、Scheffler et al. (2006)が同様に霜の降りることのない年間平均気温15 - 20℃程度の温帯気候を復元したが、中期ペルム紀において乾燥化が進行するとした[51]

古生態

オーストラリアニューサウスウェールズ州のペルム系堆積物から産出したグロッソプテリスの葉。グロッソプテリスはパンゲア大陸を構成したゴンドワナ大陸に広く分布した。

アブラハムスクラール層の堆積物は砂岩、雑色シルト岩泥岩からなる。これらの堆積層は南から北へ流下する巨大河川によって堆積して形成されており、河川自体はかつて存在した内海であったエッカ海に向けて北東方向に緩やかに傾斜する氾濫原に注ぎこんでいた[57][58][59][37]。氾濫原には湿地が広がり、河川や湖沼および森林が点在した。足跡化石や漣痕およびマッドクラック英語版から、最も広大な生息域であった湿地は頻繁に外気に晒されており、深い水底となることは滅多に無かったことが示唆される[48]。植物相では落葉性のシダ種子類であるグロッソプテリスが支配的であり、川沿いの高地に大規模な森林を形成した[48][49]。現生のトクサ属に近縁なSchizoneuraParaschizoneuraといった巨大なトクサ類も繁栄し、沼地の周囲に生育してタケのような森林を形成した。下層植生は草本性のトクサ類であるPhyllothecaシダ植物が占め、湿った場所は小葉植物が生育した[48][49]

水棲動物相には、二枚貝Palaeomutelaパラエオニスクム目英語版魚類AtherstoniaBethesdaichthysBlourugiaNamaichthysWestlepis)、大型の淡水棲捕食動物である分椎類RhinesuchoidesRhinesuchus)が含まれる[60][61]。陸上動物相は特に獣弓類が繁栄した[注 3]。アンテオサウルスは当時の頂点捕食者であり、生息環境を他の数多くの肉食性の四肢動物と共有した。他の大型捕食動物には、ライオンと同程度の体サイズであるリコスクス科英語版のテロケファルス類であるLycosuchusSimorhinella[62]スキラコサウルス科英語版のテロケファルス類であるGlanosuchusがいた[63]。中型の肉食動物は基盤的なビアルモスクス類であるHipposaurus[11]、より派生的なビアルモスクス類であるBullacephalus[64]、スキラコサウルス科のIctidosaurus[63]Scylacosaurus[65]Pristerognathus[33]、および小型かつ基盤的なゴルゴノプス類であるEriphostomaがいた[66][67]。小型肉食動物は主に昆虫食動物英語版からなり、テロケファルス類のAlopecodon[33]Pardosuchus[33]、小型のオオトカゲにも類似するヴァラノプス科英語版Elliotsmithia[68][65]Heleosaurus[69][70][71]Microvaranops[72]ミルレレッタ科英語版Broomia[33]プロコロフォン形類英語版Australothyris[73]、トカゲに類似する類縁関係不明のEunotosaurus側爬虫類[74]パンテストゥディネス類[75][76]カセア科[77]とされる)がいた[78]

アンテオサウルスと共存した大型のタピノケファルス類であるMoschops capensis

植物食動物も多様であった。大型の植食者としてタピノケファルス類のAgnosaurus[33][41]Criocephalosaurus[79][80][42][41]Mormosaurus[33][41]Moschognathus[33][41]Moschops[81][82][83][41]Riebeeckosaurus[82][84]Struthiocephalus[85][86][83][87]Struthionops[33]Tapinocephalus[79][88][83][41]、スティラコケファルス科のStyracocephalus[89][90][91]、ティタノスクス科のJonkeriaTitanosuchusがいた[92][16][65][33]。単弓類以外の大型植食者にはパレイアサウルス類のBradysaurusEmbrithosaurusNochelesaurusがいた。これらの動物は歯列が植物食性のディノケファルス類と大きく異なっているため、両者は異なる生態的地位を占めていたことが示唆される[93][94][95][96][97]。中型から小型の植食者には基盤的な異歯亜目(ディキノドン類でないAnomocephalus[98][99]GalechirusGaleopsGalepus[100][65][33])や多数のディキノドン類(Brachyprosopus[101]Colobodectes[102][103]Pristerodon[65]ピラエケファルス科英語版Diictodon[104][65]Eosimops[105]Prosictodon[106]Robertia[65])を含む。

絶滅

アンテオサウルスはキャピタニアン大量絶滅事変英語版に対応する約 260 Maで絶滅した。この絶滅事変ではディノケファルス類の分岐群自体も絶滅している[34][107]。この大量絶滅の原因として火成活動や海退、また生物間の競争が提唱されてきたが[34][108][109][110][111]、カルー地域における新たな分類群の出現はディノケファルス類の絶滅以降であったため、競争は候補から除外できる[34]

火成活動は華南に位置する巨大火成岩岩石区である峨眉山トラップ英語版に起因すると考えられており、最も活発であった時期は 263 - 259.1 Maにあたる[34]。現在の峨眉山トラップの玄武岩が被覆する範囲は25万 - 50万平方キロメートルであるが、元々の玄武岩の体積は50万立方キロメートルから100万立方キロメートルを超過したと推定されている[112]。玄武岩中に葉やその他の海洋堆積物が挟在することから峨眉山トラップの活動は水中で開始したことが示唆されており、地上でのマグマの流出はより後の段階で発生した[113]。この火成活動に際して水銀が濃集し[114][115]、また同時に負の炭素同位体移動が発生した[116]。さらに、グアダルピアン-ローピンジアン境界においてはコロネンの濃集も報告されている。コロネンは有機物燃焼に際して生じる多環芳香族炭化水素であるが、生成に莫大な熱エネルギーが必要であるため、その濃集には小天体の衝突や大規模な火成活動といったイベントが考えられている。グアダルピアン-ローピンジアン境界の場合は同時期のイリジウム濃集が認められていないため、大規模火成活動の可能性が支持されている[117]

峨眉山トラップの活動は気候変動や酸性雨、毒ガス、短期的な寒冷化、光合成の減少を通して陸上動物相の絶滅を引き起こした可能性がある[111][34]。峨眉山トラップは2時期に亘って活動したと考えられており、それぞれの活動時期が30万年継続した。最初の活動時期において2.3℃、2回目の活動時期において1.3℃の温暖化が生じたと考えられている[118]。ただし、Tapinocephalus Assemblage Zoneの最上部においてδ13Cの正異常が記録されているものの、酸素同位体の存在量に変動が無いため、絶滅期において乾燥化が進行した一方で重大な温度変化が生じなかったともされる[119][34]

広範囲にわたる生物礁の衰退は海退と関連している[120][121]。グアダルピアン-ローピンジアン境界は顕生代における主要な海退の1つと対応しており[122]、海退の化石証拠はグアダルピアン-ローピンジアン境界にあたる海成炭酸塩岩の上位に存在する蒸発岩や陸成層から得られている[121]

注釈

  3. ビアルモスクス類パキディクテス英語版ディキノドン類ランタノステグス英語版、ゴルゴノプス類のフォルキス英語版といったTapinocephalus zoneの下部から産する分類群は、既知の範囲内で最古のアンテオサウルスの標本よりも数百メートル下位の層準で発見されている。こうした動物相はEodicynodon Assemblage ZoneとTapinocephalus Assemblage Zoneとの間に位置するまだ認識されていない新しい化石帯を示唆する可能性がある[33][34]
